Cucumbers Linked to Salmonella Outbreak Made 449 People Sick Across 31 States, CDC Reports

A salmonella outbreak related to recalled cucumbers has affected individuals in 31 states and Washington, D.C. Out of those, 125 individuals were hospitalized with symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.

The recent salmonella outbreak has been traced back to recalled cucumbers, resulting in at least 449 reported illnesses across 31 states and Washington, D.C., according to the latest updates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In early June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of cucumbers that might have been contaminated with salmonella. These cucumbers were distributed to wholesalers in 14 states from May 17 to May 21.

According to the CDC, cucumbers contaminated with one of two strains caused 449 infections, resulting in 125 hospitalizations. The CDC identified two Florida growers, Bedner Growers, Inc. from Boynton Beach and Thomas Produce Company from Boca Raton, as probable sources of some of these cases.

Currently, cucumbers from these suppliers are not being harvested or grown this season.

Map of Recalls by State

The cucumber recall was announced on June 1 after the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture reported to Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. from Delray, Florida that a sample had tested positive for salmonella.

The cucumbers were sent to the following states:

  • Alabama
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Maryland
  • North Carolina
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee

The FDA is actively testing the affected cucumbers to determine any links to the ongoing illnesses. They advise consumers to consult their local retailers to find out if they are still selling cucumbers from this supplier.

Recognizing Symptoms and Treatment for Salmonella Infection

According to the FDA, salmonella is a type of bacteria that can lead to severe and even deadly infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and those with weak immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning may include:

  • Bloody diarrhea or diarrhea lasting more than three days without improvement
  • Diarrhea accompanied by a fever higher than 102 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Severe vomiting that prevents retaining liquids
  • Signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth and throat, infrequent urination, and dizziness upon standing
  • Stomach cramps

These symptoms usually appear between six hours to six days after exposure. While most individuals recover within four to seven days, those with compromised immune systems, including children under five and adults over 65, may experience more serious symptoms that necessitate medical attention or hospitalization.
