Woman taken into custody at Indiana Applebee’s after dispute over ‘All You Can Eat’ deal: Officials
A 28-year-old woman was taken into custody at an Applebee’s in Portage, Indiana earlier this month over a disagreement regarding an “All You Can Eat” offer from the restaurant chain.
The incident occurred on August 2, with the woman being charged with disorderly conduct, as detailed in a report by YSL News.
As per the arrest report, the Portage Police Department received a call about a “verbal disturbance” at the Applebee’s on US Highway 6 around 8:38 p.m. Officers were informed of “multiple females screaming” and “making threats,” according to one of the responding officers.
Upon arrival, officers encountered several adults outside the restaurant, including the woman, who claimed to have been in a loud disagreement with the restaurant’s manager.
Parties believed the ‘All You Can Eat’ $15.99 deal applied table-wide
The report indicates that the group mistakenly thought that if one person ordered the “All You Can Eat” deal, it would apply to everyone at the table.
A news release from the restaurant chain dated July 29 stated that the “All You Can Eat” promotion offers unlimited boneless wings, riblets, and double crunch shrimp, along with endless fries, at $15.99 per individual.
Upon informing the table that each person needed to individually pay for the deal, “arguments ensued,” as mentioned in the arrest report. The group accused the manager of being “very unprofessional,” arguing that nowhere on the menu did it clarify that the deal was “per person.”
The officer noted in the report that the woman showed him a menu that included the phrase “Per Person” beneath the prominent “All You Can Eat” headline. The officer demonstrated this to the group just as another couple was leaving the restaurant.
Woman also argued with the exiting couple
The woman accused the couple of having exchanged harsh words with her earlier.
As the couple left, more arguments broke out, and the woman became “very loud and unruly, drawing the attention of other diners,” according to the officer’s report.
The officer warned her regarding her disorderly behavior, while a member of her group attempted to calm her down but was unsuccessful. At one point, this person even tried to cover her mouth to quiet her, but this effort also failed.
Woman detained, bill paid after misunderstanding clarified
Ultimately, the woman was arrested and taken to the Porter County Jail.
After realizing that the “All You Can Eat” promotion was per person, another member of her group returned to the restaurant to pay the total bill.
