Delaware State football fails to catch flight to Hawaii for season opener, according to reports

Delaware State is preparing to kick off its 2024 season in Hawai’i this weekend, but things have already taken a chaotic turn for the Hornets.

The team was supposed to embark on a 10-and-a-half-hour journey to Oahu on Tuesday, but, as reported by the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, they missed their flight. The team was set to depart from John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City but reportedly had transportation issues that caused them to miss their scheduled flight.

“We’re currently developing a solution,” a team representative informed the Star-Advertiser.

Details regarding the bus issues that delayed the team were not disclosed. The distance from the Delaware State campus to John F. Kennedy Airport is approximately 178 miles, which is over a three-hour drive. On Monday, Delaware State head coach Lee Hull mentioned there were some logistical difficulties due to the time difference of six hours between the East Coast and Hawaii when traveling.

The Hornets are set to face the Rainbow Warriors on Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex in Honolulu at 6 p.m. local time, which translates to 12 a.m. ET.
