Could a Four-Door Mustang Be on the Horizon? Dealers Get Exclusive Sneak Peek at the Concept!

Is Ford planning to launch a four-door Mustang? Dealers were given a sneak peek of the concept

Since Ford CEO Jim Farley hinted that the company might explore “other Mustang body forms” beyond the classic two-door coupe and convertible, speculation about a four-door Mustang has been on the rise. According to recent widespread reports, we may be closer to seeing this become a reality.

Automotive News and The Drive informed us that Ford recently hosted a private event for dealers where they showcased designs of a Mustang sedan. Attendees were not allowed to use phones or cameras, so the details are sourced from four anonymous dealers who were present. Two of these dealers mentioned that Ford referred to the new Mustang sedan as the “Mach-4,” showcasing the brand’s playful side.

Ford went beyond just showcasing a Mustang sedan; they also revealed plans for an off-road Mustang, an EcoBoost RTR Mustang, and a V-8 Mustang convertible with a manual gearbox (though this last option may already be offered for 2024, suggesting it might be a higher trim droptop). If these were simply preliminary renderings or concepts, it could take some time before Ford officially unveils what was previewed to the dealerships.

Could Ford Make It Happen?

A four-door Mustang could be feasible; Ford might just modify the current S650 platform by extending the wheelbase and adding rear doors. They could maintain the frameless door design for a smoother transition and likely adjust the roofline slightly to provide more headroom for backseat passengers. We’ve illustrated what this could potentially look like above. Expect both EcoBoost four-cylinder and V-8-powered GT variants, while Ford might consider a performance variant similar to the Dark Horse, depending on how the rivals like Dodge develop their forthcoming four-door combustion-powered Charger models, which are expected to utilize the standard Hurricane inline-six engine with 420 hp, while the coupe versions will have a more powerful variant exceeding 540 hp. Regardless, Ford could capture the budget-friendly V-8 sedan market—Dodge’s next-gen Chargers won’t feature the Hemi V-8, and Chevy’s Camaro is no longer in the picture.

For the Sake of Adding Doors!

It’s essential to note that while Ford has never officially sold a four-door Mustang, the boundaries were gently pushed with the launch of the all-electric Mustang Mach-E. This marked the first significant variant since the introduction of the original Mustang in 1964. Although it’s technically a separate model and not mechanically related to classic Mustangs, it demonstrates Ford’s commitment to diversifying the Mustang lineup and exploring bold new directions (just think about the $325,000 Mustang GTD).

To grasp what Ford might be planning with the sedan and other revealed variants, one can look at the Bronco series, which currently includes two styles: the larger, traditional body-on-frame Bronco that competes with Jeep and the smaller, car-like Bronco Sport, providing excellent off-road capability while being more suitable for daily driving. A Mustang sedan could provide dealerships with a more versatile yet sporty option to attract buyers, especially given the competitive landscape.

As previously mentioned, rival Dodge is modernizing its Charger muscle car with a new platform that supports both electric and gasoline variants, set to launch all-electric Charger Daytonas by the end of the year (as seen above). They will introduce gas-powered, six-cylinder models called Six Packs, available in both two-door and four-door formats. The Challenger name has been dropped, and now all Chargers will be known as Chargers irrespective of the number of doors. Chevy is also rumored to be planning a revival of the Camaro as an electric sport sedan, adding more competition to the four-door sedan market.

It is quite logical for Ford to introduce a new horse from their lineup, especially with the popularity of the Mustang. As such, the idea of releasing a similar model is certainly expected.
