Revolutionary Research Unveils Optimal Workout for Those with Type 1 Diabetes

A recent study has identified the most effective exercise types for individuals with type-1 diabetes.

This research was conducted by the Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco in collaboration with Staffordshire University to explore optimal training strategies for diabetic patients.

Dr. Pooya Soltani from Staffordshire University stated, “This research holds significance as many diabetic individuals often struggle with motivation to engage in exercise as a way to manage their health.”

“A primary reason for this challenge is that physical activity can lead to decreases in blood sugar, resulting in discomfort and a lack of motivation. We aimed to determine whether different types of physical activity could help reduce these blood sugar declines.”

Nineteen individuals with type-1 diabetes took part in two randomized trials to evaluate their glycemic and cardiovascular responses following both interval and continuous exercise.

Each participant engaged in 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity on a treadmill. The interval training consisted of alternating 1-minute bursts at 40% and 60% of their estimated maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max). The continuous workout was performed at 50% of VO2max.

Measurements of heart rate, blood pressure, and blood glucose levels were taken before, right after, and 20 minutes post-exercise. Participants also reported their perceived exertion and enjoyment levels.

Findings revealed similar cardiovascular responses, exertion ratings, and enjoyment levels for both genders during the sessions. However, the study found significant differences in blood glucose changes between male and female participants, with men experiencing greater reductions.

Men displayed more significant drops in blood glucose immediately following and 20 minutes after continuous aerobic exercise, as well as right after interval exercise. Conversely, women only experienced lower blood glucose levels after continuous exercise.

The results indicate that understanding gender differences is crucial when recommending exercise for type-1 diabetes patients, as it can help prevent excessive glucose drops that might lead to hypoglycemia.

Dr. Jorge Luiz de Brito-Gomes from Universidade Federal do Vale do São Francisco remarked, “Our study indicates that for male patients, interval exercises, like short walking bursts, are preferable when starting with low blood sugar levels. On the other hand, continuous activities, such as running, are more appropriate for individuals with higher initial blood sugar levels. These strategies can aid in avoiding sudden drops in blood sugar levels.”

“For female patients, both interval and continuous aerobic exercises seem to be effective starting options. We hope these findings emphasize the importance of gender-specific recommendations in aerobic exercise prescriptions, particularly for men who have inconsistent levels of physical activity.”
