Gerard Depardieu Faces Potential Trial on Rape Allegations, Say Prosecutors

Prosecutors recommend trial for French actor Gerard Depardieu over rape accusations

According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, French actor Gérard Depardieu should stand trial for the alleged rape and assault of a young actress in 2018.

The prosecutor confirmed in an email to YSL News on Thursday that they are calling for Depardieu, aged 75, to be tried in a French criminal court on charges of digital rape and sexual assault.

Depardieu, who is one of France’s leading actors, has denied all allegations related to this case. His lawyers did not respond to requests for comments from Reuters on Thursday.

Charlotte Arnould, the actress involved, who was 22 at the time, claims that Depardieu assaulted her at his residence in Paris on two occasions, August 7 and 13, 2018.

Arnould filed her initial complaint in 2018, alleging that Depardieu raped her at his Paris residence. After the first case was dropped, she submitted a second complaint in 2020. The prosecutor’s office explained that the case was initially “closed due to insufficient evidence” but reopened after a further review of the circumstances.

A final indictment asking for a trial was submitted by the Paris prosecutor’s office on August 14. It is now up to a judge to determine if the trial will proceed. Initially, Depardieu was indicted for rape and sexual assault in December 2020.

Recently, Depardieu has been linked to numerous sexual assault allegations, which have damaged his reputation and highlighted ongoing discussions about sexual behavior in France. He has consistently rejected all accusations against him.

In October, he is set to be tried for alleged sexual assault against two women during the filming of the 2022 movie “The Green Shutters”. He has denied these allegations as well.

Furthermore, a woman filed a complaint in January regarding sexual assault claims from the 2014 filming of the short film “The Magician and the Siamese.” These proceedings were closed in April without prosecution, referencing France’s statute of limitations, which allows adult victims a six-year period to file sexual assault claims.
