Planning to Fly over Labor Day Weekend 2024? TSA Expects Unprecedented Passenger Numbers at Security
As the summer travel season winds down, travelers should get ready for busy airports and lengthy queues this Labor Day weekend.
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), this year’s Labor Day travel period is predicted to be the most hectic ever.
More than 17 million passengers are anticipated to travel during the lengthy weekend, which TSA identifies as starting from Thursday, Aug. 29, to Wednesday, Sept. 4.
“Summer travel has surged to unprecedented levels, and TSA, along with our airline and airport partners, are prepared to manage what is projected to be the busiest Labor Day weekend on record,” stated TSA Administrator David Pekoske.

Anticipated Airport Crowds for Labor Day Weekend
Expect large crowds. This year, Labor Day weekend is set to see an 8.5% increase in travelers compared to last year, so prepare yourself for some delays (unless you have TSA PreCheck, which may make things easier).
Frequent flyers are likely aware of how busy security checks have been this summer, with the top 10 busiest travel days of the year all occurring during this season. TSA has also experienced record-breaking passenger volumes during other major holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July.
When Will Airports Be the Busiest During Labor Day Weekend?
Saturday, Aug. 30, is predicted to be the busiest travel day of the weekend, with TSA estimating that 2.86 million passengers will pass through security.
Advice for Quick Security Checks
- Arrive with plenty of time to spare, even for domestic flights. TSA recommends getting to the airport at least two hours early, and three hours for international flights.
- Pack your items efficiently. To save time, ensure that your liquids are in the allowed amounts—3.4 ounces—and placed in a clear plastic bag. If you’re bringing breast milk, powdered formula, sippy cups, or liquid/cream medications, store them separately in their own bin during security checks. It’s best to keep medications in their original, labeled containers.
