Will Sabrina Carpenter keep the summer hits coming? Check out her new music video ‘Taste’

Taylor Swift has dubbed this season “the summer of Sabrina.” Now, can Sabrina Carpenter live up to that title?

The artist behind the hits “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” just launched her sixth studio album, “Short n’ Sweet,” along with the music video for its introductory track, “Taste,” featuring Jenna Ortega, known for her role in “Wednesday.”

This new song hints at a rivalry with an ex’s new but familiar partner, as Carpenter clues the other woman in on her ongoing influence.

“I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you,” she sings in the catchy chorus. “If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.”

In the music video, Carpenter makes a dramatic attempt to confront Ortega with a knife, only to find the “Beetlejuice” actress ready with a shotgun, using it to shove Carpenter off a balcony. In a climactic scene, Carpenter barges in on Ortega and the man in question while they’re in the shower, reminiscent of “Psycho.”

This single may become another success for Carpenter, following her Billboard No. 1 hit “Please” and top 10 hit “Espresso,” further contributing to her summer dominance.

Staying at the top during summer isn’t as easy as it might seem. The last time a singer captured the season with multiple consecutive hits was Olivia Rodrigo in the summer of 2021, with her songs “Good 4 U” and “Deja Vu.”

Rodrigo, another former Disney star, released her debut album “Sour” and quickly followed her breakout hit “Drivers License” with the No. 1 single “Deja Vu,” which debuted in April of that year and stayed in the top 10 throughout the summer, while “Good 4 U,” launched in May, peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 that summer.

In the summer of 2018, Drake accomplished a rare feat with three back-to-back hits: “God’s Plan,” which debuted earlier that year and dominated the summer charts; followed closely by “Nice For What,” which hit No. 1 in April and also made it to summer charts, and “I’m Upset,” a top 10 hit that didn’t quite have the same impact as the first two.

Justin Bieber marked his return in the summer of 2015. He collaborated on “Where Are Ü Now” with Jack Ü in February, which turned into a worldwide hit, entering the top 10 that summer. He then released his fourth studio album “Purpose” along with the first single “What Do You Mean?”, which reached No. 1 by mid-September. The mega-hit “Sorry” followed that fall.

If “Taste” charts successfully, Carpenter could join the ranks of a select few artists who have ruled the summer with three consecutive hit singles. The prospects look good: just over an hour after its release, the music video racked up a million views.
