Daniel Suarez’s car goes up in flames during NASCAR Cup Series event at Daytona
During his first pit stop in the Coke Zero Sugar 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday night, Daniel Suarez’s No. 99 Chevrolet Camaro caught fire.
A backfire from Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 car, which was located behind Suarez on pit road, sparked the flames in Suarez’s trunk.
Following his pit stop, Suarez drove back to pit road with flames visible from his car.
He had to be instructed to exit the vehicle, as he felt the intense heat but couldn’t actually see the fire due to a lack of a rearview mirror. Instead, he uses a rear camera that unfortunately didn’t reveal the blaze.
This incident forced Suarez out of the race. Other cars had filled up their gas tanks, leading to excess fuel being spilled on pit road.
Prior to this, Suarez had finished eighth last week at Michigan.
