New Research Shows Plugged Wells and Decreased Injection Rates Diminish Induced Earthquake Occurrences in Oklahoma

Wastewater injection resulting from oil and gas production in Oklahoma caused a dramatic rise in seismic activity in the state between 2009 and 2015. But regulatory efforts to backfill some injection wells with cement and reduce injection volumes have been effective in lowering the state's induced earthquake rate, according to a new study. Sierra Nevada mountains receive surprise snow in August

This weekend, unusually cold temperatures swept through California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, resulting in unexpected snowfall, according to officials.

The National Weather Service estimates that the area received approximately 3 inches of snow.

In spite of the cold, temperatures on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada are projected to reach highs of 58 to 73 degrees at higher elevations and 71 to 81 degrees at lower elevations on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Deputy captures rare snowfall

“While it’s uncommon to see snow during this period, it’s a reminder of how unpredictable our beautiful Sierra Nevada can be,” shared a post on Madera County Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook page on Saturday.

A sheriff’s deputy recorded video footage of the snow in Eastern Madera County, located 33 miles north of Fresno, California, on Saturday, which was later shared on the sheriff’s office’s Facebook page.

Authorities advised anyone intending to drive through or visit the Minaret Vista area to exercise caution and “be ready for the chilly weather.”

What caused the August snowfall?

A cold weather system originating from the Gulf of Alaska prompted the cool conditions on the West Coast, as reported by ABC 10.

Initially, snow fell on Mount Rainier in Washington state before spreading to California, where it dusted the Sierra Nevada on Saturday.
