Senator Elizabeth Warren, Democrat from Massachusetts, took aim at Senator JD Vance, Republican from Ohio, on Sunday for his assertion that former President Donald Trump would veto a national abortion ban if he were to regain the presidency.

“American women are not foolish,” Warren stated in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “We cannot afford to trust the futures of our daughters and granddaughters to two men who proudly admit to obstructing access to abortion.”

During the same show, Vance, who is currently the GOP’s vice-presidential candidate, indicated that Trump would reject a federal abortion ban, noting that the former president believes this decision should rest with the individual states.

“I believe he would,” Vance replied when asked if Trump might veto a nationwide ban. “He has explicitly stated that he would.”

Warren, along with many critics of the Republican ticket, disagreed with this assessment. She contended that even if Trump refrains from endorsing a federal ban, he would still work to limit abortion rights. Warren highlighted the Comstock Act, a century-old legislation that prohibits mailing abortion-related materials, suggesting that some Republicans might seek to reinstate it to impose nationwide restrictions on abortion.

“Don’t take my word for it, just look at the facts,” Warren added. “JD Vance actually wrote a letter to the Department of Justice last year urging them to enforce the Comstock Act. And keep in mind, Donald Trump chose him to be his running mate.”

In recent months, Trump has reiterated his belief that each state should determine its own abortion laws and restrictions. However, he has often praised his appointments to the Supreme Court, which played a crucial role in overturning Roe v. Wade. Vance has previously expressed openness to a national ban on abortion.

Warren urged voters on Sunday to back candidates who would enact laws to reinstate abortion rights across the nation.

“The only way we can safeguard access to abortion is by electing a Democratic Congress that will send a bill to Kamala Harris, who will sign it into law, thereby restoring rights for women in this country,” she stated. “No longer will women have to face going into an emergency room only to be told they’re not sick enough to receive the medical care they need.”
