NFL Roster Cuts 2024: Live Updates on Important Moves Before Tuesday’s Deadline

With the conclusion of the 2024 NFL preseason, teams are now facing the tough task of trimming their rosters.

Each of the 32 teams must reduce their offseason roster of 90 players to a 53-man lineup for the regular season. Many teams have already made some cuts, saying goodbye to several notable names who are now available as free agents, including OLB Randy Gregory (Buccaneers), S Ronnie Harrison (Colts), LB Deion Jones (Bills), RB Joshua Kelley (Giants), WR Denzel Mims (Jaguars), RB Boston Scott (Rams), JuJu Smith-Schuster (Patriots), TE C.J. Uzomah (Eagles), and QB Mike White (Dolphins). Smith-Schuster has already signed with his previous team on Monday.

The deadline to finalize rosters is 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Expect a flurry of player moves, including releases, trades, and placements on injured reserve as teams finalize their depth charts. Further changes will occur afterward as teams claim players off waivers, leading to additional roster adjustments before practice squads are established.

Stay updated here as we track significant transactions throughout the day leading up to the deadline:

Vikings Roster Cuts: Initial Moves by Minnesota

The Minnesota Vikings have started their cuts on Monday by releasing 14 players. Notables include quarterback Matt Corral, formerly a third-round pick by the Carolina Panthers, and running back DeWayne McBride, a standout from UAB who was selected in the 2023 draft.

Here’s the complete list of players the Vikings released today:

  • QB Matt Corral
  • RB DeWayne McBride
  • TE Sammis Reyes
  • RB Mo Ibrahim
  • CB Jaylin Williams
  • TE Neal Johnson
  • WR Justin Hall
  • OLB Owen Porter
  • OL Chuck Filiaga
  • OL Doug Nester
  • OL Matt Cindric
  • OL Spencer Rolland
  • DL Tyler Manoa
  • CB A.J. Green III

Steelers Roster Cuts: Eight Players Released

The Pittsburgh Steelers have started reducing their roster on Monday by letting go of eight players. The cuts included offensive linemen Tyler Beach and Devery Hamilton, receivers Jacob Copeland and T.J. Luther, running back Daijun Edwards, defensive lineman Marquiss Spencer, linebacker Kyahva Tezino, and defensive back Kiondre Thomas.

Seahawks Trade Update

The Seattle Seahawks continue to make moves. After sending edge rusher Darrell Taylor to the Chicago Bears and acquiring linebacker Michael Barrett for cornerback Michael Jackson, they have arranged yet another trade.

The Seahawks will bring in edge rusher Trevis Gipson from the Jacksonville Jaguars, as reported by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Gipson, 27, who had one sack last season with the Tennessee Titans and seven sacks with the Chicago Bears in 2021, adds depth to Seattle’s defensive position following the Taylor trade. Seattle will mainly depend on Uchenna Nwosu, Dre’Mont Jones, Boye Mafe, and Derick Hall moving forward.

JuJu Smith-Schuster Back with the Chiefs

JuJu Smith-Schuster, one of the notable players to be released earlier this August, is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs for his eighth NFL season. Although it seems there are no open spots among their wide receivers after he caught just 29 passes for New England in 2023, the two-time champions are making room for him once again.

When is the NFL Roster Cut Deadline?

All 32 teams need to finalize their rosters to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 27.

What Happens After the Roster Deadline?

Teams have until noon ET on Wednesday, August 28, to claim any players who have been waived during the roster cut process. Following these claims, teams will focus on finalizing their practice squads.

How Large are NFL Practice Squads?

Practice squads were expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic, allowing teams to hold up to 16 players. This is in addition to the 53-man roster. A maximum of 10 players with two or fewer accrued NFL seasons can be part of a practice squad, and up to six players with an unlimited amount of NFL experience can also be included.

An additional international player may also be added if certain eligibility criteria are met.
