NFL Roster Cuts 2024: Live Updates Ahead of Tuesday’s Deadline for 53-Man Rosters

It’s time for decisions in the NFL.

By 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, all 32 teams need to trim their rosters down to 53 players. This cutdown day can be heartbreaking for many involved in the league, as both hopeful rookies and seasoned veterans face tough choices regarding their football careers. For some, however, being selected for the initial active roster could represent a dream come true.

Several teams started the process of cutting players as early as Monday, with some squads making numerous moves. Stay tuned to YSL News Sports for real-time updates on all roster changes throughout Tuesday as the deadline approaches:

Texans Part Ways with Former First-Round Selection

According to NBC Houston’s Aaron Wilson, the Houston Texans are parting ways with cornerback C.J. Henderson, concluding their trial with the former first-round draft pick.

Henderson, the ninth overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft, signed a one-year deal with the Texans in March after spending two and a half seasons with the Carolina Panthers. The Texans sought added depth in the secondary behind Derek Stingley, but now appear ready to move forward with rookie Kamari Lassiter, Desmond King II, and potentially another first-rounder, Jeff Okudah.

Packers Make Kicker Change

Second-year kicker Anders Carlson out of Auburn struggled in his rookie season and appears to have lost the competition to veteran Greg Joseph. Carlson, who missed a crucial 32-yard field goal in the preseason finale, completed 27 of 33 field goals and 34 of 39 extra points last year. ESPN was the first to announce Carlson’s release.

Which Notable Players Might Be Released?

YSL News Sports assessed several players last week who might face cuts. Some names currently in the hot seat include:

Kadarius Toney, WR, Chiefs: His position on the roster already seemed uncertain, especially after Kansas City re-signed JuJu Smith-Schuster on Monday.

Tim Patrick, WR, Broncos: A trade might be on the horizon for a team in need of a receiver, as reports suggest Denver will not proceed with Patrick after he suffered two season-ending injuries in the past two years.

Samaje Perine, RB, Broncos: Another potential candidate for a trade from Denver, Perine recorded an average of 4.5 yards per carry and caught 50 passes last season.

Which Well-Known Players Have Already Been Released?

Jackson Carman, OT, Bengals: This second-round pick from 2021 couldn’t secure a backup position after a tough training camp and preseason.

Mike White, QB, Dolphins: After seemingly losing out to Skylar Thompson for the backup role behind Tua Tagovailoa, White is now looking for a new opportunity with another team.

Matt Breida, RB, 49ers: Despite rushing for 1,902 yards during his first stint with the team, Breida’s return to the Bay Area lasted less than a month.

Keep an Eye on Quarterback Moves

A quarterback transaction has already taken place, with the Tennessee Titans trading Malik Willis to the Green Bay Packers on Monday. This move frees up space in Nashville and provides Willis an opportunity to become Jordan Love’s main backup.

Expect further trades on Tuesday, particularly since many teams are unlikely to carry more than two quarterbacks on their 53-man rosters. Veterans like Taylor Heinicke of the Atlanta Falcons or Zach Wilson from the Denver Broncos are potential trade candidates—experienced players with expiring contracts and uncertain futures on their current teams.

Notable Players in Procedural Transactions

Roster adjustments are not limited to releases and trades. Numerous prominent players will stay on rosters in other categories, temporarily exempting them from the active 53-man list. Here are some notable players who will not start the year on active rosters:

PUP list: Patriots WR Kendrick Bourne (ACL), Dolphins OLB Bradley Chubb (ACL), Browns RB Nick Chubb (knee), Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson (knee), Ravens RB Keaton Mitchell (knee), Chiefs DE Charles Omenihu (ACL), Dolphins OL Isaiah Wynn (quadriceps).

NFI list: Panthers RB Jonathon Brooks (knee).

What is the NFL’s Deadline for Roster Cuts?

All teams must have their rosters down to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

What occurs after the roster deadline?

NFL teams have until noon Eastern Time on Wednesday, August 28, to claim players who have been waived during the league’s roster cuts. After these claims are processed, teams will start to build their practice squads.

What is the size of NFL practice squads?

Increased during the COVID-19 pandemic, teams can now have up to 16 players on their practice squads, in addition to the 53 players on the main roster. Each practice squad can include as many as 10 players who have two or fewer seasons of NFL experience, along with up to six players with an unlimited amount of NFL service time.

If a player is international and fits certain eligibility criteria, an additional 17th player can be added.
