Looking for a slower lifestyle? Receive over $16K to relocate to the Spanish countryside
If you’re eager to embrace a more relaxed way of life, filled with leisurely strolls through historical plazas, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and scenic countryside, you can now get financial support to make the transition.
The remote region of Extremadura in Spain, which shares a border with Portugal, is inviting up to 200 digital nomads and remote workers to receive grants of up to €15,000 (about $16,778) to move there for a minimum of two years.
These grants aim to assist with “accommodation, farmland, and everything required to facilitate their relocation,” according to the official website.
This initiative is part of a repopulation effort titled “Live in Ambroz,” which refers to the Ambroz Valley and its charming rural communities. The valley “is facing a persistent decline in population and services,” as detailed in a press release by the Extremadura government on Sunday.
Extremadura is a predominantly rural area with a population of just over 1 million as of 2023, according to CaixaBank Research, especially when compared to the bustling 3.3 million people living in Madrid. Additionally, living costs in Extremadura are considerably lower than in Madrid. For example, in Badajoz, a province of Extremadura with Moorish heritage, renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs around €475 (approximately $531) monthly, while a similar apartment in Madrid averages €1,366 (around $1,528).
The region also faces economic challenges, being one of Spain’s smallest contributors to the national GDP, accounting for less than 2%. Agriculture is the mainstay of the local economy.
Nonetheless, Extremadura has plenty to offer, being the second-largest wine-producing area in Spain and boasting the most freshwater coastlines with delightful inland beaches. Rich in history, visitors can explore medieval ruins from ancient Rome and exquisite Moorish architecture, providing a sense of traveling back in time.
The government plans to extend the initiative to other areas in Extremadura needing revitalization.
How can I apply to become a digital nomad in Extremadura?
Officials informed Euronews that the application process for these grants is expected to begin around mid-September. Once the application period opens, submissions can be made online through the Extremadura General Electronic Access Point.
The €15,000 grant will be divided into several awards: women and individuals under 30 who opt for a town with fewer than 5,000 residents will get €10,000 (around $11,185), while everyone else will receive €8,000 (approximately $8,947). After two years, the former group will receive an additional €5,000 (around $5,592) while the latter will get an additional €4,000 (about $4,473).
If you’re interested in applying, here are the eligibility criteria:
- You must not have resided in Extremadura for the past six months.
- You should be a legal resident of Spain, potentially via Spain’s digital nomad visa.
- Your job should be in the tech industry and involve remote work.
