Clay Matthews shares a funny take on Aaron Rodgers’ absence from his Packers Hall of Fame ceremony
On Thursday, Clay Matthews’ induction into the Green Bay Packers’ Hall of Fame saw many of his past teammates present.
Among them were Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson, David Bakhtiari, Mason Crosby, AJ Hawk, Nick Perry, Mark Tauscher, and others.
However, Aaron Rodgers, who played alongside Matthews for his entire decade with the Packers, was absent.
Now with the New York Jets for his second season, Rodgers couldn’t attend the ceremony.
Matthews, the franchise’s all-time leader in sacks, brought some humor to why Rodgers couldn’t make it to the event.
“Unfortunately, Aaron couldn’t be here today, and that’s understandable,” Matthews quipped during his speech. “But he did message me earlier that he was going to isolate himself in a dark closet, drink some ayahuasca, and join us in spirit. So, thanks, Aaron, wherever you are.”
His joke elicited laughter from the audience, referencing Rodgers’ recent off-field escapades.
Rodgers had participated in a darkness retreat earlier in 2023 while he was contemplating his future in the NFL, and he’s also openly talked about using ayahuasca, which is a psychedelic herbal brew he consumes outside the U.S.
Matthews and Rodgers shared a close bond during their time in Green Bay and even appeared in commercials together.
This year’s Hall of Fame class also included defensive end Aaron Kampman, alongside Matthews.
