Kara Welsh, Wisconsin-Whitewater Gymnastics Champion, Tragically Shot
WHITEWATER, Wis. — Kara Welsh, a 21-year-old student from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a national gymnastics champion, was fatally shot late Friday night. A 23-year-old man is currently in custody.
Originating from Plainfield, Illinois, Welsh was part of the Warhawk gymnastics team at the university. She earned the title of national champion on the vault during the NCAA Division III championships last year. She was pursuing a management degree in the College of Business and Economics.
“The news of Kara’s passing is devastating for our closely-knit university community. We must come together to provide support, process our feelings, and grieve,” stated UW-Whitewater Chancellor Corey King.
The university is providing counseling services to the gymnastics team and its coaches, who were notified of the incident in person. “We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of one of our own,” the team expressed on Facebook.
In response to the situation, staff will offer additional support and accommodations to students as classes are set to begin on Tuesday. Chancellor King has ordered that the UW-Whitewater flag be flown at half-staff on that day. More information regarding memorial services will be shared when available, according to the university.
USA Gymnastics expressed their condolences on social media, saying, “We extend our deepest sympathies to Kara’s family, friends, and teammates at UW-Whitewater Gymnastics.”
Authorities have not yet released the name of the 23-year-old suspect, who is still being held at the Walworth County (Wi.) Jail. The shooting reportedly occurred in an off-campus apartment complex.
While specifics about the incident remain unclear, police noted it stemmed from a confrontation between Welsh and the suspect, who were known to each other.
Law enforcement has referred the case to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office to consider charges including first-degree intentional homicide, use of a dangerous weapon endangering safety, and armed disorderly conduct.
The investigation is ongoing, and police indicated that no further information would be released at this time.
