Labor Day: Which Stores and Services Are Open or Closed?
On Monday, September 2, in recognition of Labor Day, banks and post offices will not be operating. Meanwhile, a large number of popular restaurants, grocery stores, and retail chains will be welcoming customers as usual. Additionally, the stock market will observe this holiday by remaining closed.
Major retailers including Walmart, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and Target will be open on this federal holiday. Costco stands out as an exception, as its warehouses will be closed for the day.
Labor Day honors the contributions of American workers and has its origins in the late 1800s, stemming from labor activists’ efforts to establish a federal holiday to celebrate the vital role of workers in America’s development and success, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The inaugural Labor Day took place on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, and by 1894, the holiday had been adopted in 23 additional states. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland enacted a law designating the first Monday of September as a national holiday.
