Katy Perry recently avoided a question regarding her collaboration with the controversial music producer Dr. Luke.

The “Wide Awake” artist shared her thoughts during a Tuesday episode of “Call Her Daddy,” but opted not to fully disclose details about her recent collaboration with Dr. Luke, which has sparked significant backlash online.

Perry deflected when host Alex Cooper brought up her work with “one collaborator in particular,” adding that “many people have expressed disappointment and were really upset that you chose to work with Dr. Luke on this album.”

“I realize that this has initiated numerous conversations, and he was just one of many who contributed to my work, but the truth is, (the music) originates with me,” Perry explained to Cooper. YSL News has reached out to Perry’s representative for further comments.

Last June, pop star Kesha settled nearly ten years of legal disputes with music producer Dr. Luke, following allegations that he drugged and raped her, which he countered by claiming she fabricated the charges to tarnish his reputation.

Dr. Luke is known for producing Kesha’s breakout hit “Tik Tok” in 2009, which launched her into the spotlight, along with “Blah Blah Blah” featuring 3OH!3 and several songs from her 2010 album “Animal.” He also produced Kesha’s second album “Warrior,” which included the popular track “Die Young.” Over the years, Dr. Luke has collaborated with various well-known artists such as Saweetie, Doja Cat, and Kim Petras.

Perry previously teamed up with Dr. Luke on her hits “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot N Cold,” as well as several chart-toppers from “Teenage Dream,” including “California Gurls,” “E.T.,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F),” and the album’s title track. He also worked on her 2013 album “Prism,” but did not contribute to her last two albums, “Smile” and “Witness,” which did not perform as well commercially as her earlier releases.

In the interview on “Call Her Daddy,” Perry elaborated that she was sharing insights from her personal “journey” in her album.

She added: “The reality is, I wrote these songs based on my experiences throughout my life and undergoing this transformation, and he was one of the individuals who assisted with that. A writer and a producer. I’m sharing my own story.”

Critics on social media reacted negatively to Perry’s comments during the interview.

One user commented, “The issue with Katy Perry (aside from collaborating with Dr. Luke) is that she lacks the emotional depth and growth required as an artist to thrive. Consider Gaga and Kesha; both have evolved musically, while Perry seems stuck in the same old routine.” Another remarked, “So she wasn’t bound by a contract like many of her supporters claimed. It’s quite disappointing for her to justify her decision to collaborate with him while referencing her own experience of giving birth.”

A different commenter noted, “This makes her look even worse. It’s distressing how much goodwill she had this era, and with incidents like this and not-so-great music, it’s quite unfortunate.”

In February, Perry shocked fans by announcing her departure from “American Idol” after seven seasons during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” stating she had a “very exciting year” ahead. Despite her aspirations for a music comeback, the journey has started off on a rocky path due to the Dr. Luke controversy and mixed reviews for her upcoming album’s lead single “Woman’s World.”

As she prepares for her album release on September 20, her new single “Lifetimes” has also generated discussions. The Balearic Islands’ Ministry of Agriculture announced they’re investigating the production of the “Lifetimes” music video due to allegations that the production company did not obtain permission to film at Ses Salines Natural Park in a restricted area.

The “Teenage Dream” singer is set to be awarded the iconic Video Vanguard Award at this year’s Video Music Awards on September 11. The five-time VMAs winner will perform at the event for the first time since her hosting duties in 2017, where she performed “Swish Swish” alongside fan-favorite rapper Nicki Minaj.
