Connor Stalions has been named the interim head coach for the football team at Detroit Mumford High School.

According to CBS Sports, Stalions, previously a staff member at Michigan, is currently at the center of an NCAA investigation regarding alleged sign-stealing activities. He will step in as acting head coach for at least one game due to head coach William McMichael’s hospitalization following a “mild stroke” last Friday.

CBS further reported that Stalions is set to coach Mumford’s Week 2 game against Flint Hamady, taking place on Friday at 7 p.m. He will serve in this role until McMichael is able to return. This season marks McMichael’s debut as head coach, following over three decades in assistant coaching positions.

Last week, Mumford faced a hefty 47-6 defeat against Thurston.

The Mustangs have struggled in recent seasons, finishing with a 1-8 record the past two years.

Prior to this season, the school brought Stalions on board as the volunteer defensive coordinator.

Stalions is currently under scrutiny in connection with the NCAA’s ongoing investigation into Michigan’s purported sign-stealing scheme, which came to light during the 2023 season. Following the emergence of this news, he resigned from his position as an off-field analyst. Allegations include purchasing tickets to numerous future opponents’ games and having individuals record coaching signals for later use, which breaches NCAA regulations.

The investigation is still active, with the NCAA having issued a Notice of Allegations to Michigan regarding this matter in August.

Additionally, the NCAA has indicated that there is evidence suggesting Stalions was disguised as a Central Michigan staffer during the Chippewas’ 2023 season opener at Spartan Stadium against Michigan State.

Stalions, a Lake Orion High School alum and a lifelong fan of the Wolverines, appeared in a Netflix documentary series titled “Untold,” which debuted on August 27, sharing his perspective on the sign-stealing controversy.
