Officer placed on leave following encounter with Tyreek Hill, who questions reason for his detention
Tyreek Hill, the Miami Dolphins receiver, expressed confusion over his detention and the use of force by police before Sunday’s season opening game, wondering, “What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?”
According to Hill, the officers claimed he was speeding and driving recklessly. He noted that he did not identify himself while being restrained face down outside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, just three hours prior to the game. Videos captured by fans on the road quickly spread online before kickoff.
“They accused me of speeding and reckless driving or something similar,” Hill stated. “I wasn’t raised to drop names. If you say I did something wrong, just give me a ticket and handle it properly. But don’t treat me disrespectfully.”
Hill mentioned that he was en route to work, “looking to make 150 yards,” when he got pulled over and detained. The situation was eventually settled, allowing him to join his teammates in the stadium for the game.
“Everything happened so quickly,” Hill remarked. “It was unexpected.”
During the game, Hill recorded 130 yards in receptions, including an 80-yard touchdown. Kicker Jason Sanders secured the win for the Dolphins with a last-minute field goal, leading to a 20-17 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After scoring his touchdown, Hill celebrated by putting his hands behind his back while teammate Jaylen Waddle tied them together at the end zone.
“We had a different celebration planned,” Hill mentioned, “but this morning’s incident changed everything.”
The Miami-Dade Police Department has opened an internal investigation regarding the situation involving Hill, and an officer has been assigned to administrative duties after the Dolphins’ win.
“That should indicate everything you need to know,” Hill said, reacting to the officer’s disciplinary actions.
MDPD director Stephanie V. Daniels stated on social media, “I am dedicated to ensuring transparency and accountability in incidents involving my officers.” She previously called for an urgent review of the incident, including body camera footage, as the game began.
Aspiring to be a police officer in the future, Hill expressed his desire to collaborate with law enforcement to turn his pregame experience into a positive outcome.
“I want to address the question: what if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? In a worse situation, it’s concerning. I have a state trooper hat and deeply respect law enforcement,” Hill emphasized.
“Of course, there are bad individuals in every field. I aim to use my platform to find a way to transform this into a positive for both myself and Miami-Dade, allowing us to positively impact the community.”
A nine-year NFL veteran and a Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, Hill recently signed a three-year contract extension worth $90 million with the Dolphins, including $65 million guaranteed.
