How many points did Caitlin Clark score today? She’s approaching the rookie scoring record
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever mounted an exciting second-half comeback, winning against the Atlanta Dream, 104-100, in overtime at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Sunday.
For most of the first half and part of the second, it looked like Atlanta would secure its first win over Indiana. Although the Fever had decent shooting, they struggled with ball control, racking up 12 turnovers, while the Dream had only one turnover. After halftime, Atlanta took a commanding 16-point lead, leaving the Fever looking defeated.
However, Indiana found its momentum again. Despite Atlanta extending its lead to nine points in the fourth quarter, the Fever fought back to tie the game and push it into overtime. During the extra period, both teams exchanged scores until the Dream failed to score in the last minute. They were forced to foul, and Clark sank free throws to complete a season sweep over Atlanta, winning all four matchups against this Eastern Conference rival.
Rhyne Howard led the game with 36 points, but Aliyah Boston stood out, leading Indiana with a career-high 30 points and 13 rebounds.
Caitlin Clark’s performance against the Dream
Sunday marked Clark’s first overtime game of the season, where she recorded 26 points, 12 assists, and five rebounds. This achievement gave her 14 double-doubles this season, breaking a franchise record. Although her performance was impressive, she contributed heavily to the team’s turnovers with nine, the highest she has had since her debut game where she had ten turnovers.
Clark entered the game third on the WNBA rookie scoring chart with 666 points this season and needed 17 points to surpass A’ja Wilson’s 682 points from her rookie season in 2018. After this game, Clark’s total rose to 692 points.
Now, she is just behind Seimone Augustus, who scored 744 points in 2006. Augustus achieved this in 34 games with the Minnesota Lynx, while Clark has just completed her 36th game, giving her the opportunity to aim for the record.
With four games left in the season, Clark, who is 52 points shy of the rookie record, needs to average 13 points per game to break it. She has effectively secured the Rookie of the Year title and has a strong chance to make further history after already setting the rookie assist record. Clark averages 19 points per game and has scored at least 13 points in 29 of her 36 games this season.
The Indiana Fever has already secured a playoff spot and currently holds the No. 6 seed. They will next face the defending champion Las Vegas Aces at home on Wednesday. The Fever will play the Aces again on Friday, also at home.
