Injury-prone J.K. Dobbins insists he’s ‘back and ready to play’ with Chargers
INGLEWOOD, Calif. — J.K. Dobbins has faced plenty of criticism since beginning his career marred by injuries. But the 25-year-old running back had a big smile for his doubters after a strong debut with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Dobbins carried the ball 10 times, gaining 135 yards and scoring a touchdown in the Chargers’ 22-10 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. This was his first game since suffering a season-ending torn Achilles in the first week of last season.
“I’m blessed, man. The Lord has placed me here, and I was prepared,” Dobbins told YSL News Sports. “He answered my prayers. I’m improving every week, getting in better shape, and I’ll be fully ready to go.”
Injuries have significantly impacted Dobbins’ NFL journey so far. Drafted in the second round by the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, injuries have kept him off the field. He suffered a serious knee injury during the 2021 preseason and only played eight games in 2022 due to ongoing knee problems. Then, his Achilles injury hindered him in the 2023 season opener, which led to him signing a one-year deal with the Chargers in April to prove himself.
Dobbins’ 2024 season debut was free of injuries and excellent. His rushing total of 135 yards is his second-best single-game tally and marks his fifth game with over 100 yards in his career. He scored the game’s first touchdown on a 12-yard run, breaking through two tackles. Later in the game, he made a 46-yard run followed by a 61-yard gallop, showcasing his recovery from several injuries.
“He played an amazing game. We all love J.K. He brings so much energy to practice and during games. We give our all when blocking for him,” said Chargers WR Joshua Palmer to YSL News Sports. “Seeing him succeed is fantastic.”
While at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh faced Dobbins when the running back played for Ohio State. In a memorable 2019 game against the Wolverines, Dobbins rushed for 211 yards and scored four touchdowns. Following Week 1, Harbaugh recognized Dobbins by giving him a game ball.
<p“J.K. Dobbins, what a phenomenal performance,” commented the Chargers head coach. “Those long runs and the tough yards he gained were impressive.”
Harbaugh’s teams are known for playing tough football and focusing on their running game. The Chargers rushed the ball 27 times, gaining a total of 176 yards, while quarterback Justin Herbert made 26 passing attempts against the Raiders.
Dobbins aims to stay healthy throughout the season, hoping to make significant contributions to a Chargers offensive game plan that looks to emphasize the run. Despite his struggles with injuries, he was optimistic after what he described as a successful start to the season and hopes to have an injury-free year ahead.
“This means everything to me. I’ve faced unfortunate injuries,” Dobbins expressed. “People thought I was done, but that’s not how I am. I grew up in a hardworking family, and we weren’t wealthy. So, all I know is to keep working hard and fighting, while also keeping a positive attitude. … We’re going to be a great team, and I’m back. I’m back and ready to play.”
