Deshaun Watson and Daniel Jones Highlight the Quarterback Pressure After Week 1
As the 2024 season begins, several quarterbacks facing heightened scrutiny maintained their struggles in Week 1.
In a recent game, Gardner Minshew, the quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders, managed to win a duel against teammate Aidan O’Connell. However, his team fell short, losing 22-10 to the Los Angeles Chargers. Minshew’s performance was disappointing, highlighted by a fumble caused during a pump fake and an intercepted pass due to a deflection.
“We have a lot to improve on. I think we hurt ourselves during this game. Credit to them; they played well,” Minshew commented. “We kept our composure, but our offensive execution wasn’t up to par with our expectations.”
Minshew completed 25 out of 33 passes for 257 yards, along with one touchdown and one interception. He also faced four sacks. This underwhelming display places him among four quarterbacks currently feeling significant pressure in the aftermath of the first week.
Deshaun Watson
Watson had a rough outing in his first game back after a shoulder injury sidelined him last season. His throws were often inaccurate, and he failed to lead Cleveland’s offense effectively.
During the game, the Browns only managed one first down in the entire first half.
Watson faced six sacks and threw two interceptions.
“I accept the blame and understand that we need to be on the same page. We have to improve for next week,” Watson told the media. “We need to execute better when we’re together on the field, recognize the game plan, and identify weaknesses in the defense to find any positive plays.”
The Browns urgently require Watson to fulfill the expectations that come with his five-year, $230 million fully guaranteed deal signed in 2022. Since leaving Houston, his performance has not matched his past success.
Bryce Young
Young’s sophomore season did not start well; his very first pass resulted in an interception. Things worsened from there, with the Panthers suffering a severe defeat, 47-10, against the New Orleans Saints.
Young completed 13 out of 30 attempts for 161 yards, tossed two interceptions, and was sacked four times.
His performance raised concerns about the Panthers’ prospects moving forward, ending the week with a disappointing passer rating of 32.8.
“We need to operate better systematically,” Young stated after the game. “That starts with me.”
Daniel Jones
Jones struggled in his first regular-season appearance since suffering a knee injury that ended his last season early. He threw two interceptions, including one that led to a touchdown for the opposing team, in the Giants’ 28-6 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings.
“Clearly, it wasn’t good enough. We didn’t score until late and managed only six points. We didn’t build any rhythm or consistency. I need to improve,” said Jones. “I definitely have to step up my game and help create more opportunities for successful plays.”
Giants fans expressed their frustration by booing Jones during the home opener. Adding to his woes, former star running back Saquon Barkley had an impressive debut for the Philadelphia Eagles, scoring three touchdowns, marking a record for the most touchdowns by a player in their first game with a new team since the Super Bowl era.
The Giants have now lost five out of the last six games that Jones has started since signing a four-year, $160 million contract before the 2023 season, during which he has thrown only two touchdowns compared to eight interceptions.
