Beyoncé receives no nominations for CMA Awards with ‘Cowboy Carter’
Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is missing from the list of nominees at this year’s Country Music Association Awards, even after the release of her groundbreaking album “Cowboy Carter.”
The nominees for the 58th CMA Awards were revealed on Monday, and the Grammy-winning artist did not receive any nominations, including for album of the year for her eighth studio album.
The CMA Awards are among the most esteemed honors in country music, and fans had anticipated that Beyoncé might become the first Black woman to be nominated and win album of the year for her influential project.
The Country Music Association states that the album of the year honor is “evaluated on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the artist’s performance, musical background, engineering, packaging, design, art, layout, and liner notes.”
According to an official statement, the awards are “decided by eligible voting members of the CMA, which includes professionals from the country music industry.”
Morgan Wallen leads the nominations with a total of seven. Other notable nominees include Cody Johnson, Chris Stapleton, Post Malone, and Lainey Wilson. Shaboozey, who collaborated on “Cowboy Carter,” was nominated for single of the year with his track “A Bar Song (Tipsy).”
As many fans are aware, Beyoncé released “Cowboy Carter” on March 29 and has since achieved historic milestones and shattered records. She has also been instrumental in drawing attention to Black country artists and the genre’s origins.
“Cowboy Carter” has garnered acclaim from fans as well as country music legends. Recently, Beyoncé topped the list with 12 nominations at the 2024 People’s Choice Country Awards.
Before launching the album, Beyoncé openly discussed the creation of this five-year project and referenced her performance at the CMA Awards in 2016.
In an Instagram post, she shared: “This album took over five years to create. It was inspired by an experience I had long ago where I felt unwelcome—and it became clear that I was not. That experience led me to delve deeper into the history of country music and explore our rich musical heritage.”
“It’s heartwarming to see how music can connect so many people globally, while also amplifying the voices of those who have dedicated their lives to educating us about our musical history,” she added. “The challenges I faced upon entering this genre motivated me to transcend the limits set upon me. Act II is a result of pushing my boundaries and taking my time to blend genres to produce this body of work.”
Last year, Tracy Chapman was honored as the first Black woman to win a CMA Award, 35 years after the debut of her classic “Fast Car.” At the 2023 ceremony, country star Luke Combs won song of the year for his cover of the song. Since it was a cover, the award was bestowed on the song’s writer. Nevertheless, Combs still earned a trophy for the song when he won single of the year, an award given to the performer. His version of the song appeared on his 2023 album “Gettin’ Old.”
Charley Pride was the first Black artist to receive a CMA Award. He achieved this milestone in 1968 when he was nominated for entertainer of the year and male vocalist of the year, eventually winning both in 1971.
This year’s CMA Awards will be broadcast live on November 20 from Nashville, Tennessee.
