Aubrey Plaza, Stevie Nicks, and Others Join Taylor Swift in Encouraging Voter Participation

Stevie Nicks urged her followers to register to vote in a social media message signed “Love, Stevie Nicks, Childless Dog Lady,” following Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election, where she referred to herself as a “Childless Cat Lady.”

Although Nicks did not officially support any candidate, she applauded Swift’s political statement. The singer is the latest in a line of celebrities who are either announcing their endorsements or motivating fans to vote.

Nicks’ post featured a heartwarming image of her with her cute dog, Lily, and referenced Swift’s Instagram endorsement, which showcased a picture of Swift with her cat, Benjamin Button, from her TIME Magazine Person of the Year shoot.

Continuing the “cat lady” theme is actress Aubrey Plaza, who shared a picture of herself alongside Grumpy Cat on Wednesday morning, captioned, “HARRIS us WALZ.”

The “Childless Dog Lady” remark nods to comments made by Trump’s running mate JD Vance in a 2021 Fox News interview, where he questioned Democratic leaders like Harris for not having biological children. He referred to them as “a bunch of childless cat ladies” lacking investment in the country’s future.

Swift stated, in part: “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she stands for the rights and causes that need a champion. I believe she is a calm, competent leader, and we can achieve so much more as a nation if we are guided by stability instead of chaos.”

Do Celebrity Endorsements Matter in Elections?

This marks Swift’s initial public endorsement of Harris.

After years of maintaining a low profile in politics, Swift made her views known in 2018 by endorsing Phil Bredesen, a Democratic Senate candidate in Tennessee. She further outlined her political beliefs in her Netflix documentary “Miss Americana” in 2020 and later supported President Joe Biden during his 2020 election campaign.

Swift’s post has garnered millions of likes, attracting support from various celebrities including Reese Witherspoon, Selena Gomez, Ellen DeGeneres, and Jennifer Aniston.

A recent survey suggests that celebrity endorsements do not carry much weight in political decisions and may even adversely affect a candidate’s appeal, according to a Suffolk University/YSL News national poll of registered voters.

Only 3% of participants reported that an endorsement by Swift or Beyoncé would influence their voting decisions “a lot,” while 89% claimed Swift’s endorsement would be inconsequential or decrease their likelihood of supporting the candidate. This poll targeted registered voters rather than Swift or other celebrity fans.
