Katy Perry responds to critics and thanks Orlando Bloom for ‘doing the dishes’ in her VMAs acceptance speech
Katy Perry delivered a candid acceptance speech when she received the Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The acclaimed artist accepted the lifetime achievement award from her partner, Orlando Bloom, who called her by her real name, Katheryn Hudson.
Perry’s performance showcased a medley of her popular tracks such as “I Kissed a Girl,” “California Gurls,” and “E.T.,” along with new songs from her upcoming album, including “Lifetimes” and “I’m His, He’s Mine” featuring Doechii. However, her song “Woman’s World” was not included in her set.
“Thank you! I accomplished all that while on my first day of my period, can you believe it?” Perry humorously remarked to an enthusiastic audience.
Katy Perry receives Video Vanguard Award, expresses gratitude to Orlando Bloom and daughter Daisy
Perry took some time to reflect on her journey, thanking her team, family, and fans, and highlighted Orlando Bloom’s contribution by saying thanks for “doing the dishes.” This was a nod to her recent candid remarks in an interview with “Call Her Daddy,” where she mentioned her playful arrangement of trading household chores for intimacy. She also expressed her love for their 4-year-old daughter Daisy Dove, saying she is “the only flowers I’ll ever need.”
The “Firework” singer expressed gratitude towards MTV for appreciating her uniqueness from the very beginning of her career. She emphasized that achieving a “long and successful career” requires many elements to come together. She boldly addressed critics by asserting, “There are no decade-long accidents,” and paused for emphasis.
Perry praised the “incredible” emerging artists who are “fierce, confident, vulnerable, and real.” She encouraged fellow musicians to avoid letting social media influence them negatively.
“I figured out how to ignore all the distractions that every artist faces, especially women,” she shared. “I want to sincerely advise you to do everything necessary to stay authentic to yourself and your art. Disconnect from social media. Prioritize your mental well-being. Take a moment. Get outside. And pursue your passion, just as I was meant to do this.”
Perry’s remarks could have been influenced by recent criticism, particularly aimed at her new album’s first single, “143,” and the track “Woman’s World.”
The Grammy-nominated singer received harsh reviews for the single and its music video released in July. Following the backlash, she defended the video on Instagram, clarifying that it was intended to be humorous. “YOU CAN DO ANYTHING!” she stated. “EVEN SATIRE!”
The pop star has also encountered criticism for collaborating with controversial music producer Dr. Luke.
“I recognize that this has sparked many discussions, and he was just one of the many people I collaborated with, but ultimately, (the music) is my creation,” Perry told Cooper. “The truth is, I wrote these songs based on my life experiences throughout this transformation, and he was one of the individuals who helped bring that to life.”
