Indianapolis woman drowned in Puerto Rico while rescuing girlfriend from rip currents, family reports

A 22-year-old woman from Indianapolis was found “underwater and unresponsive” during her vacation in San Juan, Puerto Rico, earlier this week, according to authorities.

Cimone Alicea Dawson’s body was retrieved from Condado Beach on Monday afternoon, as stated in a press release from the U.S. Coast Guard. She was vacationing with two friends when they encountered “strong rip currents” the night before.

Coast Guard officials received reports of shouting and individuals “in trouble” in the sea around 6:30 p.m., leading to a multi-agency rescue operation. Dawson’s friends were rescued thanks to the efforts of law enforcement and witnesses nearby.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of this young woman, and we hope they find strength and closure during this incredibly tough time,” Cmdr. Matthew Romano expressed in a statement.

Romano added, “I want to thank the bystanders and local authorities for their quick actions that saved two lives, and to all the Coast Guard units and emergency services for their dedication and relentless efforts during the recovery operations.”

Dawson was attempting to save her girlfriend, according to her family

As reported by WTHR, Dawson had traveled to Puerto Rico to celebrate a birthday. On the night of the event, she went missing while trying to rescue her girlfriend who was in distress.

“That was just her nature,” her cousin, Siajhanai Wean, shared with the news outlet. “If I had been on that beach, I know I couldn’t have stopped Cimone from going back into the water to help.”

The family mentioned that Cimone had recently relocated to Indianapolis for a fresh start, according to the news station. Wean has started a GoFundMe campaign to collect funds to transport her body back home for a proper burial.

“She was a bright light in everyone’s life. so kind, brave, and selfless,” the fundraiser description stated. “Her love for others was boundless, and she always prioritized the well-being of those around her.”

The family has already raised over $13,000 out of their $25,000 target.
