Embrace Social Media Mindfully: Strategies to Alleviate Online Anxiety

Young people's mental health may depend on how they use social media, rather than how much time they spend using it. Psychology researchers tried an experiment with three groups. Amy Grant Reveals Struggles with Depression and Loss of ‘Superpower’ After Life-Altering Bike Accident

Amy Grant opens up about her struggles with depression after a serious bike accident

Amy Grant is sharing her experience of the emotional impact following her serious bike accident.

The Christian musician discussed her recovery journey in an interview with AARP, two years after the incident, revealing it brought on a period of depression.

After the accident, Grant stayed home for a month and refrained from looking at “any screens.”

“I had to practice a lot of patience with myself,” Grant, 63, shared. “I experienced many heartfelt cries and faced depression. Everyone has their own struggles; that’s just life. We constantly navigate the challenges of aging.”

Grant explained that losing her “superpower,” which is her remarkable memory, has been particularly tough.

“Now, I can’t rely on my memory. However, I believe that there are hidden blessings in every situation,” she remarked.

She mentioned that the accident, along with undergoing open-heart surgery during the pandemic, has motivated her to prioritize her health, including choosing to drink nonalcoholic beer.

“The narratives we tell ourselves influence our reality,” she stated. “It’s essential to find the tools that help us move forward.”

In July 2022, Grant was admitted to the hospital after a serious bike accident in which she lost consciousness upon hitting a pothole near her Nashville home.

“I underwent a five-hour surgery to remove it, and as a result, I had to learn to sing all over again,” Grant explained.

The singer mentioned that while doctors offered her a facelift during the surgery, she opted out. However, upon waking, she noticed her “neck felt a bit tighter.”

“I likened it to an old, worn-out car that came in for a paint job and repairs; I felt renewed,” she said regarding the surgery. “It truly was a gift.”

The accident also led to ongoing challenges, such as affecting her short-term memory and balance. “I often forget what I have forgotten,” she noted. “Sometimes I walk as if I’m unsteady and just have to laugh through it all.”
