NHL Training Camps Kick Off with Jeremy Swayman Still Seeking a Contract

Boston Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman remains unsigned as NHL training camps commence

(This story has been updated with new details.)

NHL training camps started on Wednesday, and Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman is among the notable restricted free agents who has yet to sign.

The 25-year-old Swayman is expected to take on the role of the Bruins’ top goalie after the team traded Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators this offseason. This trade was made to free up salary cap space for Swayman’s anticipated salary increase.

“We intend to work on a contract,” Bruins general manager Don Sweeney told the media. “It’s disappointing when you aim to prioritize certain things as a general manager and haven’t yet achieved them.”

For the last three seasons, Swayman and Ullmark shared the goaltending duties, but Swayman was the starter in all but one playoff game last season, achieving a remarkable .933 save percentage—the best in the league—despite the Bruins exiting the playoffs in the second round. He had a maximum of 43 starts during the regular season last year.

Sweeney opted not to disclose details regarding ongoing negotiations and expressed dissatisfaction with some of the reports concerning offseason discussions. Joonas Korpisalo, who came over in the Ullmark trade, will take over as the starting goalie until Swayman finalizes his contract.

“I am hopeful that we will come to an agreement by December 1,” stated Sweeney.

The deadline for restricted free agents to sign for eligibility to play for the remainder of the regular season is December 1.

Other notable restricted free agents who have not yet signed include Detroit Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider, New Jersey Devils forward Dawson Mercer, and Winnipeg Jets forward Cole Perfetti.

“I believe we’re not too far apart in discussions,” said Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman regarding talks with Seider.

On Wednesday, two restricted free agents secured contracts: Nashville Predators forward Philip Tomasino and Los Angeles Kings forward Arthur Kaliyev both signed one-year deals worth $825,000.

Injuries Affecting NHL Players

Dallas Stars’ top scorer Jason Robertson will miss a significant portion of training camp due to recovery from foot surgery he underwent in the offseason, according to GM Jim Nill. He is anticipated to be ready by the start of the regular season.

The Washington Capitals shared that forward T.J. Oshie is likely to be placed on long-term injured reserve this season as he continues to manage a chronic back issue. “Our organization fully supports him as he evaluates his current health situation,” general manager Chris Patrick stated.

Evander Kane of the Edmonton Oilers is scheduled for surgery soon, as announced by GM Stan Bowman. He will be missing training camp and the start of the regular season. Kane indicated he would be undergoing surgery for hip adductor issues and to repair two torn abdominal muscles along with two hernias.

Additionally, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin exited Wednesday’s opening practice due to an injury, as reported on the Sabres’ website. “He will be evaluated, and we will determine the next steps,” said coach Lindy Ruff.

Victor Hedman Appointed as Lightning Captain

Victor Hedman has been named the 11th captain of the Tampa Bay Lightning, taking over the position from Steve Stamkos, who served as captain from 2014-15 before becoming a free agent and signing with the Nashville Predators.

Hedman is about to commence his 16th season in the NHL and was named playoff MVP during the Lightning’s Stanley Cup run in 2020. He recently signed a four-year contract extension during the offseason.

Nick Foligno Selected as Blackhawks Captain

Nick Foligno has been chosen as the 35th captain of the Chicago Blackhawks. Jonathan Toews, the Blackhawks’ last captain and a three-time Cup winner, had served from 2008-23 but is currently taking time off for health-related issues.

Foligno, with 17 years of experience, is entering his second season with Chicago, having previously captained the Columbus Blue Jackets for six seasons.
