Baker Mayfield, the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, can relate to Bryce Young from the Carolina Panthers. Mayfield was once in a tough situation before he found a new team in Tampa Bay.

In a show of solidarity, Mayfield shared his support for Young following the latter’s recent demotion.

“Being a quarterback is challenging, especially for younger players, especially when they’re not supported by the right people or given a fair chance to succeed,” Mayfield told the media. “Many times, a player can have talent and intellect but lack the right environment or support.”

“Currently, I feel I’m in a much better situation than I have been in the past. It’s not about criticizing previous teams; it’s just about having the right surroundings and coaching.”

Mayfield, who was the top draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2018, faced challenges after being released when the Browns acquired Deshaun Watson in 2022. He was traded to the Panthers but left after just seven games. Later in 2022, Mayfield was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams and ended up signing with the Buccaneers in 2023, marking his fourth team in the NFL.

Last season, Mayfield had his best performances, reaching career records in passing yards and touchdown throws, which led him to be named an All-Star. This success was followed by a three-year extension with the Buccaneers.

Having rejuvenated his career in Tampa Bay, Mayfield holds hope for a similar turnaround for Young.

“I understand what Bryce is going through; it’s about rediscovering your confidence,” Mayfield remarked. “He’ll make it. His journey is far from over.”

At only 23 years of age, Young, who was the first overall pick in 2023, has a potentially long career ahead. His rookie contract lasts until the conclusion of the 2026 season. Following his benching, Young’s future with the Panthers remains unclear; however, head coach Dave Canales has stated that trading Young isn’t currently a consideration for the team.

Ultimately, Young’s progress and the quality of his environment will be crucial in determining whether he can bounce back like Mayfield did.
