2024 Voter’s Blueprint: Harris vs. Trump on Hot-Button Topics

Voter’s Guide 2024: Positions of Harris and Trump on Key Issues

Candidates’ stances on critical voting topics such as abortion, the environment, health care, and gun legislation.

The 2024 election is just around the corner! On November 5, Americans will make a significant decision by choosing the next president of the United States. The candidates, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, are fundamentally different in many aspects, although there are some commonalities between them.

Despite their varying strategies to tackle America’s biggest challenges, both candidates have promised to address inflation, reduce taxes, and support Israel amid its conflict with Hamas. They also agreed on eliminating federal taxes on tips.

Nonetheless, the approaches of Harris and Trump greatly contrast, particularly on issues like climate change, reproductive rights, and gun regulation.

Before voting, YSL News offers this voter guide to clarify each candidate’s stance. Here’s what Trump and Harris have expressed about major topics, in their own words:

Positions on the topic of abortion:

Harris: “How can these elected officials think they know better than women about their needs?” Harris remarked at a Planned Parenthood event in Minnesota on March 14, 2024. “We must be a country that trusts women.”

Trump: “After 50 years of failures, I successfully overturned Roe v. Wade, to the surprise of many,” Trump posted on Truth Social on May 17, 2023.

Candidates’ views on health care:

Trump: “We will improve the Affordable Care Act and make it significantly more affordable for you,” Trump stated in an April 11, 2024, Truth Social video, though details were not provided.

Harris: “Various factors contribute to high health care expenses and costly medications,” Harris said on August 29, 2023, at the White House. “We will ensure that those prioritizing profits over the health of Americans are held accountable.”

Candidates’ views on climate change:

Harris: “The impacts of the climate crisis are evident daily across our nation,” Harris noted in Baltimore, Maryland on July 14, 2023. “Most people now recognize this because it is undeniable.”

Trump: “Right now, we are dependent on fossil fuels. Perhaps in the future that might change, but estimates suggest we have between 100 to 500 years left,” Trump said during an August 12, 2024, X Spaces discussion with Elon Musk.

Candidates’ positions on gun control:

Trump: “Every attack by Biden against gun owners and manufacturers will be stopped within my first week, possibly my first day, back in office,” he declared at a National Rifle Association event on February 9, 2024.

Harris: “Solutions do exist. It’s misleading to claim you have to choose between supporting the Second Amendment or enacting reasonable gun safety laws,” Harris stated on September 22, 2023, at the White House.

Candidates’ views on the economy:

Harris: “I will confront corporations that engage in illegal price gouging. I will also take action against landlords who unfairly raise rents on working families,” Harris said during an August 10, 2024, rally in Glendale, Arizona.

Trump: “Drill baby, drill,” Trump emphasized in an August 4, 2024, Fox News interview. “We must reduce prices. Lowering energy costs will bring down prices across the board.”

Positions on immigration control:

Trump: “I will redirect a significant portion of the federal law enforcement system to focus on immigration enforcement,” Trump declared at a Faith & Freedom Coalition event on June 24, 2023. “We must utilize all available resources to combat this incredible invasion.”

Harris: “As a former attorney general of a border state, I targeted transnational gangs, drug cartels, and human traffickers,” Harris expressed at an August 10, 2024, rally in Glendale, Arizona. “I successfully prosecuted numerous cases, so I know what I’m talking about.”

Candidates’ views on law enforcement in America:

Harris: “Building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve is crucial for public safety. Any police misconduct jeopardizes that trust—and the right to equal justice under the law,” Harris stated on December 18, 2023.

Trump: “I will also protect police officers and law enforcement personnel nationwide from being targeted by the extreme left for taking decisive actions against crime,” he said at a campaign event in Waterloo, Iowa on December 19, 2023.

Candidates’ perspectives on the Israel and Gaza conflict:

Trump: “During my presidency, Iran was at its lowest financially and could not support Hamas or Hezbollah,” Trump remarked on February 24, 2024, at the Conservative Political Action Conference. “If I were president, Israel would never have faced an attack.”

Harris: “We need to establish a ceasefire and finalize the hostages’ agreement now,” Harris emphasized during a rally in Glendale, Arizona, on August 10, 2024.

Viewpoints of the candidates on the Ukraine conflict:

Trump: “I will speak with both Putin and Zelenskyy. They each possess their own strengths and weaknesses, and within a day, we can resolve that conflict,” Trump remarked at a CNN Town Hall on May 10, 2023.

Positions of the candidates on taxation:

“I significantly reduced taxes. Tremendously reduced them,” Trump declared in his address at the Republican National Convention on July 18, 2024. “We will do that again and even improve upon it.”

“We aim to implement a tax cut for the middle class that will benefit over 100 million Americans,” Harris announced at her speech for the Democratic National Convention on August 22, 2024.
