Renewing U.S. passports is now much simpler.

The State Department has launched online passport renewal services across the country as of Wednesday. This option was previously in a limited testing phase.

“You can avoid the hassle of printing and mailing. Renew your passport from home (couch included!) entirely online, 24/7,” the State Department’s Consular Affairs announced on X Wednesday. “It’s safe, easy, and available whenever you need it.”

Nevertheless, not everyone is eligible to renew online.

Is it possible to renew a US passport online?

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be at least 25 years old.
• Reside in a U.S. state or territory.
• Possess a valid passport issued for 10 years between 2009 and 2015, or one that is more than 9 years but less than 15 years from the current application date. The passport must be intact, not reported lost or stolen, and still in the applicant’s possession.
• Apply for a regular tourist passport.
• Have the ability to upload a digital photo.
• Complete the renewal fee payment online with a credit or debit card.
• Not travel internationally for at least 8 weeks following the application date. The current passport will be canceled while the renewal is processed but does not need to be mailed in.

What are the renewal fees for a US passport?

The cost for renewing a passport online is the same as by mail: $130 for a passport book with standard shipping.

How long does it take to renew a passport in the US currently?

Although some online renewals were completed in just a few weeks during the testing phase, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Verma mentioned on Tuesday, “It might not always be quicker.”

As of Wednesday, the anticipated processing time for both online and mail applications is shown as six to eight weeks on the State Department’s website.
