David Beckham discusses family life, Victoria’s documentary, and how Leonardo DiCaprio helped him secure an Emmy
NEW YORK — The Netflix documentary series about David Beckham has received an Emmy award, thanks in part to Academy Award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio.
“I reached out to Leo for some advice,” Beckham, 49, shared with YSL News. At that point, Beckham’s production team, Studio 99, was still searching for a director for the documentary. “(DiCaprio) suggested I meet Fisher (Stevens). From the moment I met Fisher, I knew he was the right fit. I felt he would narrate the story in a more unexpected way, and he certainly did.”
DiCaprio and Stevens collaborated on the 2016 documentary “Before the Flood.” Fans of “Succession” might recognize Stevens, who portrayed Hugo Baker, a high-ranking communications officer in the HBO series.
“I think one of the characters in ‘Succession’ is a Manchester United fan,” Beckham commented, referring to the team he played for from 1991 to 2003. “Fisher had clearly talked to them, and they encouraged him, saying, ‘You’d be crazy not to do this.’ So that’s how it all came about.”
Busy like Beckham: Super Bowl, Lionel Messi, and philanthropy
Since retiring from soccer in 2013, Beckham claims he’s “probably busier” than when he played professionally. This year, he appeared alongside his wife Victoria in an Uber Eats Super Bowl commercial; he is a co-owner of two soccer teams, including Inter Miami FC, which brought soccer legend Lionel Messi to the U.S.; and he dedicated his summer to collaborating with Stella Artois on their “Moments Worth More” initiative.
Beckham was in New York for Stella’s “Let’s Do Dinner” event, aimed at blending celebrity influence with philanthropy to support Matt Damon’s organization Water.org, which has assisted over 70 million people in gaining access to clean water in developing nations since 2009.
Matt Damon refers to Beckham as “a galactically-famous human being” and highlights how beneficial his support is for raising awareness for the cause.
Beckham shared that he has traveled extensively with UNICEF and witnessed children in various parts of the world lacking access to clean water. “Water is often something we overlook,” he remarked. “It’s crucial to give back whenever possible.”
Interestingly, Beckham is a big fan of Damon and had met him a few times before the event. “I’ve always admired him as an actor and as a person,” Beckham stated. “He comes across exceptionally well and has a wonderful family.”
David and Victoria Beckham’s greatest pride
Beckham can definitely empathize with public figures who prioritize family values. As a father of four, he and his wife Victoria Beckham hold their children as their “greatest pride.” Coming from a working-class family in London’s East End, Beckham emphasizes the hard work of his parents and two sisters. Despite their fame, he and Victoria strive to instill similar values in their children.
“They could have turned out differently, but we feel incredibly fortunate,” Beckham said about his children Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz, and Harper.
During the dinner, Romeo made a surprise visit with his father. “They are kind, humble, hardworking, and just genuinely good people. That’s the most important thing,” Beckham stated about his family. “We take great pride in our achievements.”
Beckham mentions that both he and Victoria are proud of their individual professional paths. His wife’s successful journey will be highlighted in a forthcoming documentary currently being created by Beckham’s production company.
“Victoria is an extremely dedicated individual,” he states. “She has been running her fashion brand for nearly 18 years, and throughout that period, I’ve witnessed the immense effort she puts in. So when I suggested making a documentary, she was both thrilled and anxious.”
Ultimately, Beckham attributes the encouragement for the former Spice Girl to pursue the documentary to his studio’s collaboration with Netflix.
“My goal is to demonstrate to people the level of commitment she has and how she is intricately involved in every aspect of her business,” he adds. “This documentary is quite different from my life narrative. It will focus on her journey in entertainment as well as her business ventures. I believe viewers are going to really enjoy it.”
