Ryan Routh Claims Donald Trump Stakeout Was ‘Assassination Attempt,’ According to Prosecutors

Prosecutors claim Ryan Routh considered Trump stakeout an ‘assassination attempt’

Authorities highlighted evidence from the case, including a fingerprint on the rifle allegedly linking Routh to the crime and his phone’s location tracking near the golf area and Mar-a-Lago for nearly a month.

WASHINGTON – In a recent court document, prosecutors indicated that Ryan Routh wrote a note describing his trip to the Trump International Golf Club earlier this month as “an assassination attempt” against former President Donald Trump, and he even offered a $150,000 reward for anyone who could fulfill the task if he was unsuccessful.

Routh was arrested on September 15 while trying to escape the Florida golf course where Trump was playing, following an incident where the Secret Service fired shots at a person with a rifle positioned behind the fence. The FBI discovered an SKS semiautomatic rifle equipped with a scope and loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition in the makeshift snipers’ position.

Allegedly, Routh had placed the note in a metal box with an unidentified person months prior to the golf course incident. After learning about Routh’s arrest, this individual opened the box, which contained ammunition, a metal pipe, building materials, four mobile phones, and several letters, according to the prosecutors.

The letter stated, “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump, but I failed you. I did my utmost, and now it’s up to you to finish the task; I will offer $150,000 to anyone who can accomplish it.” A photo of this letter is included in the court documents.

Routh, aged 58, faces charges for illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon and for possessing a weapon with its serial number removed. The details of the handwritten note could lead prosecutors to escalate the charges against him to include attempted assassination.

Routh is due for a detention hearing at 11 a.m. on Monday, with prosecutors aiming to keep him in custody until the trial. He has yet to enter a formal plea, which is set for September 30.

Court documents included more allegations connecting Routh to the firearm and suggesting his stalking behavior towards Trump.

Authorities found a fingerprint on the tape affixed to the SKS rifle that likely belongs to Routh.

Analysis of Routh’s mobile phone revealed that he traveled from Greensboro, North Carolina, to West Palm Beach, Florida, on August 14. Between August 18 and September 15, Routh’s phone connected to cell towers near Trump International Golf Club and Trump’s residence at Mar-a-Lago multiple times.

After being stopped by local police in a black Nissan Xterra that had been spotted leaving the golf course, officers found that the license plates did not belong to the vehicle. In addition, FBI agents discovered two extra license plates in Routh’s car, along with six mobile phones, 12 pairs of gloves, a Hawaii driver’s license, a passport, and a handwritten list of dates in August, September, and October that outlined where the former president had been or was expected to be.
