A man shot his wife outside a Wichita, Kansas elementary school on Monday after they had dropped off their two kids for class, according to police reports.

The shooting took place around 9:15 a.m. local time in front of Cessna Elementary School. Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter addressed the media during a news conference but did not disclose the identities of those involved.

Eyewitnesses reported that the woman was shot in the chest and fled toward the school seeking assistance, Easter stated.

Upon arrival, a deputy encountered the suspect, who was pointing a firearm at the victim’s head. The deputy took cover, then returned fire, resulting in the suspect’s arrest.

“A brief struggle occurred between the deputy and the suspect, but the officer was able to subdue him,” Easter mentioned. “Importantly, this was not a school shooting and no students were harmed or at risk.”

Couple Used Lyft for Their Trip to School

The couple arrived at the school via a Lyft ride shortly before the incident, per Easter’s details. Investigators have spoken with the driver and other witnesses present.

Both the alleged shooter and the victim were transported to a local hospital for treatment, Easter added.

The school was put on lockdown during the situation, but Easter confirmed that there were no injuries to students, teachers, or staff.

“There was not a school shooting involved. These volatile situations can occasionally unfold near schools,” Easter acknowledged. “It’s understandably alarming for parents, but law enforcement responded within two minutes of the incident, and the situation did not propagate into the school.”
