Freddie Prinze Jr. Returns: Exciting Updates on the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel

Freddie Prinze Jr. joins the cast of ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ sequel: Here’s what we know

A classic slasher film is being revived.

Sony Pictures is developing another sequel to the iconic 1997 film “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and it looks like some familiar faces will return.

Sources close to the project, who prefer to remain anonymous, have revealed that Freddie Prinze Jr.—who portrayed Ray Bronson—will be back, and that talks are ongoing with his on-screen love, Jennifer Love Hewitt (who plays Julie James), for her to rejoin the cast.

Neal Moritz, the producer behind the original film and its 1998 sequel, as well as the 2006 standalone film “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,” will also return as producer for this new installment.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for her work on “Unpregnant” and “Thor: Love and Thunder,” will direct and co-write the script alongside Sam Lansky, who has also contributed to Britney Spears’ memoir, “The Woman in Me,” and wrote a notable story on Taylor Swift for Time magazine in 2023.

Why are Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. excited for the slasher sequel?

Before his role was officially confirmed, Prinze Jr. expressed his eagerness to “make everything work” for the sequel.

In a July interview with Us Weekly, he shared, “Everyone must be satisfied with the script.” He noted that there are many positive aspects making him want to participate, including the involvement of Kaytin Robinson.

Interestingly, Prinze Jr. met his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, on the set of the 1997 movie. Gellar’s character, Helen Shivers, fell victim to the movie’s mystical killer. Other stars in the original were Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki, and Anne Heche.

Hewitt also shared her enthusiasm with Us Weekly about potentially returning to her horror role.

“I loved making those movies. There’s nothing quite as enjoyable as a horror film. It’s exhilarating. Julie James was such a fun character,” she expressed in May. “I feel like there’s some unresolved story there, so I would be thrilled to return.”

Here’s the latest on the upcoming addition to the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” series.

What’s the plot of the ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ sequel?

Details remain limited as the project is still in early stages of development.

Prinze Jr. mentioned to Us Weekly his uncertainty about the direction of Ray and Julie’s story, saying, “I don’t know where they will find them or what their circumstances will be.”

However, fans received a hint from Kaytin Robinson via a social media post stating that this new movie will follow the storyline established in the 1998 sequel.

She confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, in July that “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” remains part of the canon, addressing rumors that the 2025 film would disregard previous sequels.

Back in 2014, there was a plan for a reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” by Sony Pictures, involving writers Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard, but that project ultimately didn’t progress;

A show with the same title was released on Amazon Prime Video but was discontinued after just one season.
