JoJo Siwa’s Sparkly Outfit Sparks Diverse Opinions
It’s yet another day where JoJo Siwa’s fashion statement elicits a variety of opinions.
In a cover shoot for Ladygunn magazine released on Monday, Siwa strikes a pose in bold gold combat boots and a custom rose gold rhinestone-adorned masculine chest plate that showcases sculpted abs, along with a matching jockstrap, created by Kyle Farmery’s Sparkyle Studio based in New York City.
The 21-year-old Siwa was aiming for an outfit that could double as a “Halloween costume,” according to her interview with Ladygunn that accompanied the photoshoot.
“We can’t just do a cool photo shoot and hope for the best,” she said. “It has to be something like, what is she wearing now? You know what I mean? It has to represent what the next Halloween costume is.”
Comments on the Instagram post showcasing the outfit ranged from negative to perplexed. One comment disliking the photos garnered nearly 29,000 likes, and another noted, “I don’t hate it, I’m just confused.”
One commenter mentioned that Siwa’s new management was “ruining her career.” In contrast, another fan pointed out that people would embrace this look if Lady Gaga had done the same photoshoot.
Although Siwa has not directly addressed the mixed feedback regarding her outfit, she did share a reply from a user on X (formerly Twitter), who posted, “Loving your balls JoJo @itsjojosiwa. Always a showstopper. Never change girl.”
Previously, Oscar nominee Kristen Stewart faced similar backlash earlier this year when she posed for Rolling Stone with her hand tucked into a (non-bejeweled) jockstrap. She remarked how the negative feedback illustrated a double standard.
“It’s a bit ironic because I feel like I’ve seen plenty of male nudity on magazine covers,” she stated during her appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in March. “There’s a certain overt acknowledgment of female sexuality that tends to annoy those who are sexist and homophobic.”
JoJo Siwa Embraces Attention, Regardless of Its Nature
The former “Dance Moms” star, who revealed her queer and pansexual identity in 2021 and underwent a dramatic hairstyle change in 2022, is known for sparking discussions on social media.
Siwa believes she is skilled at self-promotion and drawing attention online, a trait influenced by well-known social media figures like Jake and Logan Paul.
“I learned early on that any attention in the public eye is still attention. good or bad,” she shared with Ladygunn. “I just got new management, who are exceptionally supportive, and they suggested we need to rally people around me and help them like me. But I think, oh no, that’s not the goal.”
Siwa acknowledges that “nobody wants to see me be boring” and expressed, “The part of me that isn’t visible is the person managing the image you’re witnessing.”
She also mentioned, “My greatest joy is entertaining and making people smile and laugh, whether they’re laughing with me or at me.”
“Of course, nobody enjoys being disliked, but I find joy in being entertaining, and that’s what draws people in.”
