UNLV Quarterback to Sit Out Season Over Unmet Commitments

UNLV Quarterback Will Not Continue This Season Due to Broken Promises

Matthew Sluka, the starting quarterback for UNLV, shared on social media that he has decided to stop playing this season and will utilize his redshirt season instead.

This decision enables the senior, who previously played four seasons at Holy Cross, to re-enter the transfer portal.

“I chose to commit to UNLV based on certain promises that were not honored after I enrolled,” Sluka stated in a post on X. “Despite conversations, it became obvious that these commitments would not be met going forward. I extend my best wishes to my teammates this season and hope for the program’s ongoing success.”

During his time at Holy Cross, Sluka set several records as a dual-threat quarterback, achieving the top spot in FCS career passing efficiency, second in career rushing touchdowns, and fifth in career passing touchdowns.

This season, he led UNLV to three consecutive victories, amassing 318 passing yards and six touchdown passes, along with 253 rushing yards and one touchdown.

With Sluka no longer on the team, the Rebels will rely on either Hajj-Malik Williams or Cameron Friel for their upcoming Mountain West Conference match against Fresno State on Saturday.
