What is Galaxy Gas? New trend of nitrous oxide products raises alarms

Galaxy Gas warns on its website that misuse or inhalation of its products is strictly forbidden and poses serious health risks.

Inhaling nitrous oxide can lead to fainting, heart problems, and numerous other health issues. Despite these dangers, young people (and possibly some celebrities) have turned to a product called Galaxy Gas for “whippets.”

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is mainly used as a sedative to alleviate anxiety and nervousness, as explained by the Cleveland Clinic. When administered by medical or dental professionals, it can “slow down the nervous system and create feelings of calm and euphoria,” states the facility.

However, there’s a troubling trend where many individuals, especially teens, inhale the gas outside of medical settings to achieve that “euphoria.” This recreational use has led to the term “whippets.” Although whippets have existed for some time, Galaxy Gas is a nitrous oxide product that has gained popularity among influencers, celebrities, and teenagers on social media recently.

Here’s what you need to know about this recent addition to the concerning trend.

What is Galaxy Gas?

Galaxy Gas is an Atlanta-based company that markets whipped cream dispensers, nitrous oxide tanks, and whipped cream chargers aimed at chefs, baristas, and other culinary professionals.

The company acknowledges the potential for misuse, evident in a disclaimer on its website stating that “nitrous oxide products are sold solely as food processing propellant for whipped cream and culinary purposes only. It is illegal for individuals to buy nitrous oxide products for any unintended use.”

“Intentional misuse or inhalation of any content is prohibited and poses significant health risks,” the notice further mentions. “By entering our site, you agree to hold the seller, distributor, and/or manufacturer of this nitrous oxide product harmless for any injuries or claims arising from misuse.” Users must click “Yes” to proceed.

The nitrous oxide products from Galaxy Gas are priced between $35 and $90 and feature colorful, space-themed designs.

Galaxy Gas disapproves of product misuse

In a statement issued to YSL News on Tuesday, Galaxy Gas reinforced its disclaimer and expressed concern over the recent trends on social media.

“Nitrous oxide is often utilized in the food and beverage sector and by chefs to produce creamier cold brews, desserts, sauces, and more,” said spokesperson Megan Paquin on behalf of Galaxy Gas. “The unlawful misuse of our nitrous oxide products is a significant health risk. Our products are meant solely for responsible culinary applications, and we are alarmed by recent media reports and social media posts regarding the illegal misuse of our products.”

“Our terms of use and sales conditions categorically forbid illegal or improper use and marketing to minors. If you or someone you know is misusing nitrous oxide, please contact the Crisis Lifeline at 988 for help with substance abuse resources.”

Why is Galaxy Gas trending?

There has been a rise in interest surrounding Galaxy Gas as nitrous oxide use has gained traction among celebrities, including Kanye West, who has been linked to the gas.

The rumors about Kanye’s supposed addiction to nitrous oxide emerged when Milo Yiannopoulos, a former chief of staff for his Yeezy brand, shared a screenshot on X in August showing the rapper messaging a doctor for the gas. Kanye has yet to confirm or deny using the gas recreationally.

To combat the concerning trend, TikTok has removed search capabilities for “whippets” and “Galaxy Gas.”

“Stay informed and vigilant,” warns TikTok when anyone searches “whippets” or “Galaxy Gas.” “Some substances can be hazardous when misused. Find out more about the effects of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco on your mind and body.”

SZA criticizes Galaxy Gas marketing to Black youth

Artist SZA recently spoke out about Galaxy Gas, voicing concerns that its products are being targeted specifically at Black children. “Someone needs to protect the kids,” SZA posted on X, also questioning the “childlike” and vivid designs of the products, labeling the marketing as “spooky.”

“Are you trying to entice kids on purpose?” continued the singer in her post.

Is Galaxy Gas illegal?

Purchasing and selling nitrous oxide is not against the law. Whippets are not controlled by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and are not classified as controlled substances under the Drug Control Act.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees nitrous oxide under the Food Drug and Cosmetic Act. While buying nitrous oxide for approved uses is lawful, some states have banned.

In California, recreational use of nitrous oxide is considered a misdemeanor. Additionally, selling this gas to individuals under 18 is illegal in several states, including Arizona, California, and Connecticut.

In certain states, such as Iowa, possessing, selling, or using nitrous oxide for the purpose of inhalation has been banned altogether, regardless of age. Recently, Louisiana also imposed a ban on the recreational sale and use of nitrous oxide for all age groups.

A law enacted in New York state in 2021 prohibits the sale of “whipped cream chargers” to anyone under the age of 21. This regulation aims to address the misuse of whippets and restrict the sale of nitrous oxide cartridges.
