Herbert’s Ankle Injury: Chargers Coach Jim Harbaugh Shares Encouraging Updates

Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh provides positive update on Justin Herbert’s ankle

This week, there’s uncertainty regarding Justin Herbert’s status for the game.

On Wednesday, Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh shared an update about Herbert’s ankle issue.

“Justin underwent x-rays, which came back negative, and had an MRI on Monday, indicating that he is making progress,” Harbaugh informed the media.

During Wednesday’s practice, Herbert was labeled as a limited participant.

“I managed to throw the ball a bit,” Herbert stated. “I participated in some 7-on-7 drills and other activities.”

Herbert mentioned that his ankle is improving, and the approach is to take things “day-by-day” while getting ready to face the Kansas City Chiefs.

This marks the second consecutive week that Herbert’s injury has been a significant topic in the NFL.

He suffered a high-ankle sprain during the Chargers’ Week 2 victory against the Carolina Panthers. The injury happened in the third quarter when Herbert attempted to evade defenders but was held back by linebacker DJ Johnson and simultaneously struck by defensive end Jayden Peevy.

Last week, Herbert did not practice on Wednesday or Friday leading up to the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Additionally, he exacerbated his ankle injury during the third quarter of the Chargers’ 20-10 defeat to Pittsburgh.

In preparation for their Week 4 showdown against the Chiefs, the Chargers are also facing injury issues with several key players.

In the loss to Pittsburgh, left tackle Rashawn Slater (pectoral), rookie right tackle Joe Alt (knee), and outside linebacker Joey Bosa (hip) all incurred injuries.

The timing of these injuries is unfortunate for Harbaugh and the Chargers.

Harbaugh has yet to face Patrick Mahomes, who has an impressive 30-5 record against AFC West competitors and is 8-2 against the Chargers. The Super Bowl champions have won their last five matches against Los Angeles, with the Chargers last defeating the Chiefs on September 26, 2021.

“He’s an exceptional player and the best in the game,” Harbaugh remarked about Mahomes. “What he can accomplish is remarkable. I have nothing but admiration for him.”
