Must-See: George Clooney and Brad Pitt Join Forces
Having George Clooney in a film is typically a fantastic choice. The same goes for Brad Pitt.
But when they pair up on screen? That’s a jaw-dropping deal! The dynamic duo from “Ocean’s Eleven” reunites for the Apple TV+ action-comedy “Wolfs,” making it one of our top picks as September wraps up. For those looking for a Netflix binge, check out the romantic comedy “Nobody Wants This,” featuring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. And yes, that title is quite bad. However, a much better one is “My Old Ass,” a dramedy featuring Aubrey Plaza and Maisy Stella. (Do you remember the little girl from the ABC country soap “Nashville”? That’s her!)
Now let’s dive into the exciting details:
Catch George Clooney and Brad Pitt in ‘Wolfs’ on Apple TV+
“Wolfs” (now streaming on Apple TV+) casts Clooney and Pitt as competing “fixers” assigned to the same job, both seasoned veterans who resist change. (Here’s a fun tidbit: I once had a Zoom call with Clooney’s dog during the pandemic; it was unforgettable.) The film, while filled with familiar buddy-comedy elements, is a delight largely because of the chemistry between its two leads, who trade witty banter and confront each other as they transition from rivals to partners when their plans gradually unravel. (You can check out my ★★★ review.)
There’s a plethora of streaming options available, so many that I compiled a guide for your weekend viewing enjoyment. Don’t miss theatrical films like “Civil War” and “Challengers,” which are among the year’s best. Also, be sure to explore original movies, including the uplifting Will Ferrell documentary “Will & Harper” and the “Rosemary’s Baby” prequel “Apartment 7A.”
Watch Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This’ featuring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody
Remember when I mentioned last week that “The Penguin” was the best new show this year? Well, “Nobody Wants This” (streaming now on Netflix) is an absolute treat, coming in close behind. Bell stars as a cheeky podcast host who falls for a rabbi (Brody) fresh out of a relationship, sparking challenges as an agnostic woman pairs with a devout Jewish man. The show thoughtfully explores how our past love lives shape our present ones. TV critic Kelly Lawler also praised the series, calling it “absolutely scrumptious” and dubbing the leads as “electric and sexy” in her ★★★½ star review.
My colleague Erin Jensen spoke with Bell and Brody about how “Nobody Wants This” illustrates the theme of opposites attracting. Bell appreciates that the show realistically portrays the conflicts that arise when someone isn’t your ideal match, prompting the question of whether the relationship is worth the effort.
Don’t Miss ‘My Old Ass’ in Theaters (not referring to me, the movie)
Whether you are young or old, you’ll find something relatable in the quirky (and cleverly titled) “My Old Ass” (currently in theaters). Stella portrays a Canadian girl who, on her 18th birthday, experiments with mushrooms with her friends, leading to encounters with her 39-year-old self (Plaza). Their discussions, first in person and later through messages and calls, help them navigate emotional issues, particularly significant for the teen as she tackles her identity, family connections, and future prospects during her last summer at home.
I had an insightful chat with writer/director Megan Park, who aims to connect with audiences at any life stage, whether you’re 18 and preparing to leave home or 14 and envisioning your future adventures.
to experience life in its fullness, or you’re 70 years old reflecting on your children and grandchildren.” (If you haven’t seen Park’s first film, “The Fallout,” a relevant and compelling drama about school shootings starring Jenna Ortega, make sure to check it out.)
Here’s some more awesome stuff!
- In relation to “The Penguin,” Oscar-nominated prosthetics artist Mike Marino details the filmmaking secrets behind Colin Farrell’s transformation into the HBO series’ lead gangster, and the changes to Sebastian Stan for the dark comedy “A Different Man.”
- Will Ferrell teams up with his close friend, trans woman Harper Steele, for a road trip in the Netflix documentary “Will & Harper,” where he speaks about the importance of uplifting diverse voices “that don’t receive the recognition they deserve.”
- Seeing Taylor Dayne at the “Golden Bachelorette” prom is certainly a draw for me. Love will indeed guide you back.
- Amy Poehler is excited that “Inside Out 2,” which is currently streaming on Disney+, has been named Beyoncé’s favorite movie of the year.
