Hurricane Helene: Impact on College Football

Hurricane Helene reached Florida late Thursday and is affecting the college football schedule for Week 5.

The Florida Gators are having a bye this week, while the Miami Hurricanes are set to play Virginia Tech on Friday evening. Florida State is traveling to Dallas for a game against SMU in their home opener. Although the hurricane’s direct impact isn’t felt in Dallas, FSU’s travel plans may still be impacted. UCF will welcome Deion Sanders and Colorado in Orlando, with FOX’s ‘Big Noon Kickoff’ broadcasting live from there this weekend.

Additionally, the Alabama-Georgia game in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, might also be affected due to the storm’s anticipated rain and winds.

Friday, Sept. 27

12:20 p.m.: As a result of Hurricane Helene’s aftermath, App State has canceled its home game against Liberty scheduled for Saturday. This matchup will not be rescheduled.

Thursday, Sept. 26

11:40 a.m.: Florida State is adjusting its schedule, heading out to Dallas a day earlier than usual for their game against SMU on Saturday as a precaution due to the storm. They will fly out from Jacksonville, as confirmed by FSU’s head equipment manager. The Weather Channel has predicted Hurricane Helene will make landfall later tonight.

Wednesday, Sept. 25

6:08 p.m.: FSU’s volleyball game against Miami has been moved up from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. as a precaution due to the approaching storm. The latest advisory from the National Weather Service indicates that Hurricane Helene is projected to hit Florida, particularly the Tallahassee area, as a Category 4 hurricane.

South Florida also made adjustments to its athletic schedule, including pushing Friday’s volleyball match to Saturday and canceling the FSU Pre-Regional Meet in Tallahassee. USF football is still expected to face Tulane at noon on Saturday in New Orleans.

UCF has postponed its men’s soccer game against Georgia State from Friday to Sunday.

1:50 p.m.: Florida State’s marching band, the Marching Chiefs, has decided not to send their two-bus pep band to Dallas for the Saturday game against SMU.

11:34 a.m.: The Weather Channel has reported that Hurricane Helene has intensified to a Category 1 hurricane:

11:30 a.m.: The National Hurricane Center has officially classified Helene as a hurricane, as it continues to strengthen on its path towards Florida.

9:02 a.m.: According to a 5 a.m. ET update from the National Hurricane Center, Helene is intensifying as it moves towards Florida. The storm is anticipated to bring “tropical storm conditions” to areas along Florida’s Big Bend coast starting tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 26.

Tuesday, Sept. 25

7:18 p.m.: Florida State announced that their soccer match against Clemson scheduled for Thursday has been postponed, with a tentative rescheduling for 7 p.m. on Friday.

4:11 p.m.: According to the Tallahassee Democrat, Florida State athletics is keeping a close watch on Hurricane Helene for any changes to their football and soccer schedules. FSU football coach Mike Norvell didn’t confirm if the storm will affect the planned Friday departure for road games but stated they have contingency plans in place.

FSU soccer coach Brian Pensky mentioned that, as of Tuesday afternoon, there were no changes to the women’s soccer game against Clemson on Thursday. The Seminoles currently hold the title of defending national champions.

3:44 p.m.: While Orlando is on Florida’s Atlantic Coast, the storm’s considerable size might still bring rain and winds to that region if Helene makes landfall just south of Tallahassee, as predicted. Colorado’s football coaching staff, led by Deion Sanders, has altered travel plans due to the approaching storm.

“We don’t want to risk the storm hitting on Thursday, which could delay our travel. We’re departing on Wednesday instead of Thursday,” Sanders stated. “We’re aiming to stay ahead of the situation and manage it wisely.”

12:59 p.m.: Meteorologist James Spann from Birmingham shared insights on Twitter regarding the potential effects of the top-five Alabama-Georgia matchup in Tuscaloosa.

12:16 p.m.: The football game between Florida A&M and Alabama A&M has been postponed to Nov. 29. Originally scheduled for Saturday, this game was to be the Rattlers’ SWAC home opener, but the decision was made to postpone due to Hurricane Helene, which could escalate to a major Category 3 hurricane upon approaching Florida.
