How can I support those impacted by Hurricane Helene? Here are ways to contribute
Hurricane Helene unleashed severe rainfall, powerful winds, and flooding that caused destruction across several Southern states on Thursday and Friday.
Helene struck land late Thursday as a Category 4 hurricane in Florida’s Big Bend area, bringing with it significant flooding and damage along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The storm then moved northward, causing further destruction and power outages in Georgia, and raised concerns of dam failures in Tennessee as it weakened to a tropical depression.
The hurricane slammed into Taylor County, Florida, with winds of 140 mph, just east of the Aucilla River’s mouth and approximately 10 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida.
Data from the YSL News power outage map indicated that by Saturday afternoon, there were 372,227 power outages reported in Florida.
North Carolina was also significantly impacted, with areas like Chimney Rock and Asheville experiencing heavy rainfall. The highest recorded precipitation was 29.5 inches in Busick Raws, as reported by the office of North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. By Saturday, the state recorded a total of 635,887 power outages.
As the affected states start to recover from the devastation caused by Helene, various relief initiatives and funds are being established to provide support.
