As Week 5 of the 2024 college football season wraps up, the Heisman Trophy race sees some interesting developments.

Among the top six candidates, four are quarterbacks, featuring Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Miami’s Cam Ward.

Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty have climbed into the top six, pushing past several quarterbacks from last week’s rankings. Meanwhile, Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava dropped slightly following a bye week, and Jackson Dart fell after Ole Miss lost to Kentucky.

Jalen Milroe Takes the Lead

Alabama’s quarterback, Jalen Milroe, made a significant leap from third place (+700) to the favorite for the Heisman Trophy (+175) in just 24 hours, thanks to an impressive showing against No. 1 Georgia.

Milroe got off to a quick start, scoring the first two touchdowns and giving Alabama a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. He secured the 41-34 win with a crucial 75-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Williams with just over two minutes left in the game.

He completed 27 out of 33 passes for 374 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Additionally, he rushed for 117 yards and two more touchdowns on 16 carries.

Who’s Else is Climbing the Rankings?

After Milroe’s rise, Cam Ward has slid to the second spot.

The quarterback for Miami led his team to a narrow win against Virginia Tech but didn’t perform at his peak. He finished with 24 completions out of 38 attempts for 343 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions, along with 57 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Travis Hunter from Colorado improved his standing after making a notable Heisman pose following an interception during the game against UCF on Saturday.

Ashton Jeanty Remains a Strong Contender

The Boise State running back is certainly a player to watch as the season progresses. Jeanty made the most significant jump over the past week, moving up from a tie for eighth (+2000) on September 20 to fourth on September 29.

He is the only player in the FBS this season with four rushing touchdowns in multiple games, tallying 259 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries in a 45-24 win against Washington State.
