General Motors (GM) has reached an agreement to pay $35 million to owners of certain GMC and Chevrolet vehicles following a class action lawsuit regarding faulty parts, as announced by JND Legal Administration on Tuesday.

This proposed settlement applies to specific truck models from 2011 to 2016 that have Duramax diesel 6.6L V8 LML engines, which were reportedly fitted with “excessively fragile” high-pressure fuel injection pumps called CP4s. These faulty components were known for malfunctioning, causing “financial losses” for the vehicle owners due to repair costs, as stated in the lawsuit.

As part of the settlement, GM maintains that it did not do anything wrong. The two sides decided on the $35 million payment to sidestep the “expenses, risks, and delays involved in further legal proceedings.” The settlement still requires final court approval before it can proceed.

Here’s what you need to know about the settlement, how to determine if you qualify, and the method to claim your compensation.

Which vehicles are included in the GM settlement?

To be eligible for compensation, you must own one of these vehicles:

• 2011-2016 Chevrolet Silverado.
• GMC Sierra trucks featuring a Duramax diesel 6.6L V8 LML engine.

The vehicles need to have been purchased from a GM-authorized dealer located in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania, or Texas between March 1, 2010, and September 13, 2024.

Steps to receive your payment

The terms of the settlement provide three types of compensation for affected owners. The total payout amounts are approximate and will vary based on the number of approved claims. These include:

• Individuals who paid for a CP4 repair out of their own pockets that was not covered by a warranty. A total of $30 million will be allocated for this group, with individual payments possibly between $6,356 and $12,712.
• Former owners of the trucks who did not incur out-of-pocket expenses for a CP4 repair. $5 million will be set aside for this category, with individual payments ranging from $400 to $800.
• Current owners of trucks that have yet to be repaired. These individuals can get reimbursements for future repair costs, receiving 50% back on the expenses incurred for a CP4 repair done at a GM-authorized dealership after the settlement is officially approved. This reimbursement offer will end 12 months after the final approval or once the truck reaches 200,000 miles.

The deadline to submit these requests will be 60 days following the repair date.
