Inside the Lives of the Menendez Brothers: A Riveting New Documentary Unveils Their Stories

New ‘Menendez Brothers’ documentary includes interviews with Erik and Lyle ‘in their own words’

The Menendez brothers are back in the public eye with the release of the second part of Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters” series, titled “The Eric and Lyle Menendez Story.”

Next up is a Netflix documentary that will feature the brothers speaking directly about their experiences, “in their own words.”

In 1989, Erik and Lyle were found guilty of murdering their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home and received life sentences without the possibility of parole in 1996. Prosecutors alleged that the brothers killed their parents to inherit a $14 million fortune. However, Erik and Lyle contend that they were victims of severe abuse at the hands of their father, which Erik testified began when he was six and continued until the time of the murders.

Ryan Murphy’s series, which dramatizes these events, has sparked significant controversy and criticism, including remarks from Erik Menendez. In a statement shared via his wife Tammie Menendez, he condemned the show for spreading “horrible and blatant lies” and for its “disgusting portrayals” of both him and Lyle.

On a different note, Cooper Koch, who plays Erik in the series, met Erik during a prison visit organized by Kim Kardashian last week. Although Erik had not seen the Netflix series yet, he praised Koch for his performance, as Koch told The Hollywood Reporter. Kardashian, who is now a prominent advocate for criminal justice reform, is also advocating for the brothers’ release.

During a press conference on Thursday, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced that his office would evaluate new evidence related to the brothers’ case, including a letter one of the brothers sent to a relative alleging abuse.

Some family members of the Menendez brothers criticized the series, calling it a “phobic, gross, anachronistic, serial episodic nightmare” filled with inaccuracies and ignoring important recent evidence that could exonerate them.

In response, Murphy defended his show in interviews with Entertainment Tonight and The Hollywood Reporter, stating he aimed to showcase multiple viewpoints on the case. He even suggested that the Menendez brothers should be grateful for the attention they are receiving due to the show.

Brothers to revisit trial in new Netflix documentary

Not long after the nine-episode series made waves and topped Netflix’s charts, a new documentary featuring recorded phone conversations with the brothers will be released on the platform. Directed by Alejandro Hartmann, this documentary shows the brothers discussing their trial from the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, where both are serving life sentences.

According to Netflix, “For the first time in 30 years, and in their own words, both brothers revisit the trial that shocked the nation.” The film will also include extensive audio interviews with legal experts, journalists, jurors, family, and other knowledgeable individuals to provide fresh insights into a case that many believe they know well.

Here’s what to expect from the new documentary focused on Erik and Lyle Menendez.
