Could a Dynamic Duo Emerge? Exploring the Fit of Davante Adams and Garrett Wilson on the Jets

What Would Davante Adams Bring to the Jets? A Potential Powerful Partnership with Garrett Wilson

A trade involving wide receiver Davante Adams is anticipated to happen soon. The New York Jets are viewed as strong contenders to secure the three-time First-Team All-Pro player, particularly since it has been reported that he is keen on being traded from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Many fans believe that the Jets are fully committed to this season; however, they still need to make a significant move to truly cement that. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been actively recruiting his former teammate from the Green Bay Packers. Adams has also shown interest in reuniting with Rodgers.

By bringing Adams on board through a trade, the Jets could provide Rodgers with even more offensive weapons, which would represent a bold move at a time when they’ve structured the team to win immediately. With Rodgers being the oldest player in the league at 40 years old, missing out on acquiring Adams could make the efforts of Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh seem a bit half-hearted.

In a conversation on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast, Adams expressed his desire to join forces with Rodgers again. He stated, “If I’m gonna be reunited with anybody, it would be Aaron.”

With the Jets being a likely destination for Adams, let’s explore how he might integrate with the team and the potential fantasy football ramifications.

Davante Adams’ Role with the Jets

The synergy between Rodgers and Adams on the field is clear. After spending eight seasons together in Green Bay, Adams achieved remarkable stats during his last three full seasons there with at least 100 catches, 1,000 yards, and 11 touchdowns each year.

As of Week 5, Rodgers has been trying to connect with his current top wideout, Garrett Wilson, but their synchronization has been a challenge. Wilson has only managed to catch 58.9% of his targets this season, while Adams recorded a 75% catch rate over his last two seasons with Rodgers.

Wilson, now in his third NFL year after being drafted 10th overall in 2022, had his standout game with Rodgers against the Vikings in Week 5, where he caught 13 passes on 22 targets for 101 yards and a touchdown. However, Rodgers has noted that defenses have been targeting Wilson early in the season.

Following the Jets’ initial three games, Rodgers remarked, “Every team we have faced has focused on shutting Garrett down.” Opponents have shifted safety coverages toward Wilson’s side, pushing Rodgers to rely on secondary receivers like Allen Lazard.

Lazard came to New York at Rodgers’ request, sharing a previous rapport from their time together in Green Bay over three seasons. He currently leads the Jets with four touchdowns and has had at least eight targets in three of five games.

If Adams were to join the Jets, Lazard would likely drop to the third position on the depth chart.

Another factor to consider with Adams joining the team is the pressure he could put on opposing defenses. With both Adams and Wilson on the field, defenses would find it more challenging to double-cover the Jets’ receivers consistently.

Adding to the potential transition, Adams is familiar with Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, having worked with him during his final three years in Green Bay. This prior relationship would likely facilitate Adams’ integration into the Jets’ current offensive system.

Top Wide Receiver Duos in the NFL

Some of the top NFL teams boast exceptional wide receiver duos. The Jets could join this elite group by acquiring Adams to partner with Wilson.

This would place them alongside renowned combos like Philadelphia’s AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, Miami’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, and San Francisco’s Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.

Jets’ Possibilities with Mike Williams Trade

The Raiders have informed other teams that they expect nothing less than a second-round pick for Adams. In the offseason, the Jets added veteran wide receiver Mike Williams to enhance their offensive options. However, Williams is coming back from a torn ACL sustained in 2023 and has not played more than 71% of the snaps this season.

During the Jets’ Week 5 defeat against the Vikings, a noted lack of chemistry between Williams and Rodgers was evident. On a critical drive deep into Minnesota territory, Rodgers’ pass meant for Williams was intercepted by Stephon Gilmore after Williams failed to be where expected.

Williams, who was drafted in 2017 by former Chargers GM Tom Telesco—now the GM for the Raiders—could potentially be included in a trade to the Raiders, or may be dealt to another team in need of receivers.

Clearly, the Jets are eager to make an impact this season, and adding Adams could significantly elevate their offensive capabilities.

Davante Adams’ Contract Information

Adams has a salary of $17.5 million for this season, with $13.5 million remaining due. He is also under contract through 2026, with an annual salary of $36.25 million for those years.

The Jets have over $17.1 million in salary cap space available. However, after a potential trade, they would likely need Adams to agree to a restructured contract.
