Clash of the Titans: Apple Series 10, Pixel 3, and Samsung Galaxy 7 Battle for Smartwatch Supremacy

Smartwatch Comparison: Apple Series 10, Pixel 3, and Galaxy 7 Compete

This year’s trend in smartwatches leans towards sleek designs, with some models being significantly larger.

The newest versions from Apple, Google, and Samsung each present a unique style, and there are new health features to explore.

I can easily distinguish the latest Apple Watch from its predecessors without needing a fancy strap—a first for me!

However, while the updates on the Apple Watch Series 10 (starting at $399 for 42mm, $529 as tested for 46mm aluminum with LTE) are noticeable, they aren’t revolutionary. You can quickly see how it differs from the Series 7, 8, and 9, which looked almost identical to each other.

Apple isn’t alone in embracing a consistent design; both Google and Samsung also kept their watch aesthetics relatively unchanged despite incorporating new technology inside.

This year, Google introduced a larger size with the Pixel Watch 3 (starting at $349.99 for 41mm, $399.99 for 45mm, and $449.99 and $499.99 as tested for the 41mm/45mm models with LTE), responding to consumer demand for a bigger option.

Meanwhile, Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch Ultra (starting at $649.99, with the 47mm titanium model tested at the same price) for those craving a hefty, adventure-ready timepiece, similar to Apple’s Ultra models.

I’ve been testing these new devices—two from Google, two from Samsung, and one from Apple—since they hit the market, giving me ample time to assess their features.

A quick note: unlike before, many apps are no longer universal across iOS and Android. The Pixel Watch only works with Android devices, optimizing performance for Pixel phones. Samsung’s watches provide better functionality on their Galaxy phones. The Apple Watch Series 10, like all previous models, only functions with iPhones, so you’ll need to switch smartphone platforms to use any of these watches.

Overall, these smartwatches are impressive. While the Pixel Watch 3 may feel simpler compared to its Apple and Samsung counterparts—lacking in unique watch faces and notifications—it benefits from the well-integrated Fitbit health features thanks to Google’s acquisition of Fitbit in early 2021.

Features

All models boast peak brightness levels suitable for sunny conditions—up to 2000 nits, while the Galaxy Watch Ultra and Apple Watch Ultra 2 can shine even brighter at 3000 nits.

Battery life isn’t impressive across the board; however, the Pixel Watch 3 shows improvements over earlier generations. The robust Galaxy Watch Ultra can last significantly longer due to its larger battery, boasting up to 100 hours between charges with power-saving features.

Each smartwatch offers comprehensive health tracking, including sleep monitoring, ECG tests, and workout tracking. Both Apple and Samsung devices added sleep apnea detection this year, a feature absent in the Pixel Watch 3. While Google and Samsung can monitor blood oxygen levels, Apple’s recent models will not feature that capability due to legal disputes impacting sales beyond December 31, 2023.

Apple Watch Series 10

The Apple Watch Series 10 is slightly larger, lighter, and thinner than the Series 9. It also features a smaller digital crown and brings brighter always-on display technology, making it easy to check the time with just a glance.

Pixel Watch 3

The Pixel Watch 3’s always-on display is more visible in daylight compared to its predecessor. The 45mm size fits my wider wrist comfortably. A “body response” alert from Fitbit indicates stress or excitement, triggered rather quickly—which might be too sensitive during awkward face-to-face discussions.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch Ultra

Both the Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra come with an upgraded biometric sensor that improves accuracy. This new BioActive sensor features colored LEDs that track long-term blood sugar trends, similar to insights provided by an A1C blood test. Instead of invasive blood testing, the watch scans the skin for sugar byproducts, known as Advanced Glycation End Products.

or AGEs. Based on my understanding of my a1c results, the AGE Index seems to provide a fairly accurate assessment.

The Galaxy Watch Ultra comes with some impressive features designed specifically for divers, hikers, and outdoor fans. However, there’s also plenty to enjoy for those who have a more laid-back lifestyle.

Should You Buy a New Smartwatch?

If you’ve recently purchased a smartwatch, there likely isn’t enough new here to convince you to upgrade. The exceptions are: if you have larger wrists and are a Pixel Watch enthusiast who struggles with the smaller option, or if you’re a fan of the Samsung Galaxy Watch and are willing to spend a bit more, the Galaxy Watch Ultra is Samsung’s first genuine high-end model that comes with extended battery life and new features for sports enthusiasts that standard watches lack.

However, if this is your first venture into smartwatches, now is a great time to buy. These are the finest models from various companies in a market that’s now well-established. Thus, you will acquire an excellent watch that should serve you well for several years.

Remember: before selecting a smartwatch, consider your fondness for your smartphone, as that will significantly influence your choice of the right smartwatch.
