On days when the ship docks at a port, many cruise-goers rush to get off and explore. However, Michael McGreevy prefers to remain on board.

McGreevy, along with his wife Lisa, often chooses to stay on the ship during port stops, enjoying a relaxed morning routine.

“If we don’t order room service, I’ll grab some coffee, and we’ll lounge in the cabin until the crowds leave,” he shared. “Then we’ll venture out.”

The couple has cruised together since 2013, but McGreevy notes that the activities in the Caribbean resemble those they have back home in St. Petersburg, Florida.

“We can jet ski or swim with dolphins at home,” said McGreevy, who is 51 and works at a credit union. “We really cruise to unwind.” They do seek out unique shore excursions in new ports but typically prefer to stay on the ship.

Although many travelers find ports appealing, there are distinct advantages to remaining on the ship during docking. Here’s what you should know.

Is It Beneficial to Stay on a Cruise Ship in Port?

By staying onboard, guests can take full advantage of the ship’s amenities without the hassle of long lines at the buffet or competing for a pool chair.

“One of the greatest benefits is being able to enjoy an uncrowded ship,” explained Sheri Griffiths, founder of CruiseTipsTV. On days at port, attractions like water slides often have shorter wait times.

This can lead to a more relaxed atmosphere.

During their most recent cruise, the McGreevys spent a port day in Cozumel, Mexico, enjoying the hot tub. “We could just relax in the hot tub while others rushed around the port,” he said. “It was wonderful.”

With fewer passengers on board, spa services also enjoy increased availability on port days. Griffiths pointed out that these days often offer significant discounts on treatments, with bundles like massages and facials available.

“Generally, there are perks, and the treatments tend to last longer and cost less without losing quality,” she noted.

Guests might also gain a unique perspective on how the cruise operations work. On port days, crew members often conduct safety drills.

“You might see them practicing emergency simulations,” Griffiths explained. “They may use a dummy with a pretend medical condition, and it’s quite reassuring.”

While these drills commonly happen in crew-only areas, announcements regarding them can be heard throughout the ship.

What Facilities Are Accessible While in Port?

McGreevy mentions that the ship is generally “fully operational” on port days, with some notable exceptions. For instance, retail shops usually close when the vessel is docked.

“To provide tax and duty savings for guests, shops can only operate while in international waters,” Royal Caribbean International explains on its website. Casinos typically close as well.

Some dining options may also run on limited hours. The main dining rooms sometimes offer reduced service, according to Griffiths.

“They might offer breakfast before the crowds disembark but close for lunch,” she said.

Are There Activities on Cruise Ships While in Port?

Absolutely. “No cruise ship will simply say, ‘There’s nothing to do, everyone is off the ship,’” Griffiths stated.

However, the activity schedule may be a bit lighter compared to sailing days. Guests can still participate in exercise classes or trivia games, but the variety may be somewhat limited.

Griffiths mentioned that this lighter schedule allows crew members to enjoy shore outings as well. Activity offerings typically resume a few hours before the ship departs, she added.

While port stops are a significant part of many cruise itineraries, there’s no prescribed way to enjoy cruising. “When everyone else is off exploring, it’s like having a day at sea all to yourself,” Griffiths said.
