Jets on the Verge of Acquiring Star WR Davante Adams from Raiders, Sources Say

Jets Closing In On Trade for Star WR Davante Adams from Raiders, Reports Say

Just over a month after Davante Adams denied any discontent with the Las Vegas Raiders, the accomplished three-time All-Pro wide receiver is set to part ways with the team.

He is now expected to reunite with a former teammate in a highly anticipated move.

According to various reports, the Raiders were finalizing a trade to send Adams to the New York Jets, marking the end of a disappointing chapter for the Raiders after acquiring the star player. This transaction sets Adams up to rejoin quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Jets are anticipated to offer a conditional third-round pick, which could elevate to a second-round pick if Adams is named an All-Pro or participates in an AFC Championship game or Super Bowl, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

This decision follows the Jets’ recent coaching changes, having fired coach Robert Saleh last Tuesday after their loss to the Buffalo Bills, which left them with a 2-4 record.

Adams expressed to the Raiders on September 30 that he would prefer a trade rather than staying with the team. Initially, the Raiders resisted any trade inquiries, but became open to discussions following Adams’ request, as reported by multiple sources.

Adams, at 31 years old, joined the Raiders in 2022 following an impressive eight-year stint with the Green Bay Packers. He aimed to reconnect with his close friend and former Fresno State teammate Derek Carr, prompting the Raiders to trade a first and second-round pick to make it happen.

However, this partnership lasted only a season, as Carr was benched during the latter part of 2022 and subsequently let go.

The following season brought more chaos in Las Vegas, with coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler being dismissed midseason after a 3-5 start. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was replaced by rookie Aidan O’Connell, and Adams recorded his lowest stats in receiving yards (1,114) and touchdown catches (eight) since 2019 when his season was cut short by injuries.

This past summer, a clip surfaced from Adams expressing frustration during a Week 6 game against the New England Patriots in the Netflix documentary series “Receiver.” He stated, “I gotta get the (expletive) out of here before I lose my (expletive) life.”

Despite this and former NFL player DeSean Jackson’s claims of Adams being unhappy, the wide receiver insisted earlier this season that he was not dissatisfied with the team.

“Everyone is eager to hear what Davante Adams has to say, and, you know, he’s upset in Vegas,” Adams commented on September 4. “If I were upset, I wouldn’t be here right now.”

However, on October 1, Adams’ attitude seemed to shift. When asked on the “Up & Adams” show if he had played his final game for the Raiders, he replied, “All I can control is this conversation we’re having right now. After this, all I can manage is what comes next. I’m going to get up shortly and have a good workout, and that’s all I can handle.”

Reuniting Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers

This July at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Rodgers ignited excitement when he mentioned Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and expressed, “And I love Davante. I can’t wait to play with him again.”

Adams later confirmed on “Up & Adams” that Rodgers had brought up the idea of reuniting.

“He’s definitely in my ear, that’s for sure,” Adams stated. “But it’s not straightforward. Sure, we can reminisce and talk about possibilities, but as I said, I’m a Raider, and he understands that.”

During his eight years with the Packers, Adams secured five of his six Pro Bowl selections, connecting with Rodgers for 615 catches, 7,529 yards, and 68 touchdowns.

On the Jets, Adams will need to quickly rekindle this connection with the experienced quarterback. While wide receiver Garrett Wilson managed to record a season-high 107 yards in the loss against the Bills, the Jets’ receiving group has largely struggled to find consistency. Rodgers laid blame on free-agent signing Mike Williams for running the wrong route on a critical late-game interception that sealed their defeat.

Davante Adams’ Contract Details

This season, Adams has a base salary of $16.89 million, with most of this amount still owed to him. The Jets will be responsible for covering the remaining salary, according to Schefter.

Looking ahead to 2025 and 2026, Adams’ salary is expected to surge to over $35 million annually, with cap hits exceeding $44 million. While these funds are not guaranteed, the contract’s makeup will likely require a revision of the five-year, $140 million agreement he signed upon joining the Raiders.

Davante Adams’ Career Statistics

Throughout 11 seasons, Adams has established himself as one of the most reliable pass catchers in the NFL. He ranks fourth in career receptions (890) and receiving yards (10,990) among active rosters. Additionally, he sits 13th all-time in touchdown catches (96), trailing only Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Mike Evans among active players.

As of 2024, Adams has recorded 18 catches for 209 yards and one touchdown in just three games, having missed the Raiders’ last three outings due to a hamstring injury.
